The ones I Love: 22-250- a coyote's worst nightmare .284 Win.- hottest short action round in lever guns .270 Weatherby Mag.- hottest long range load in a semi-auto 45-70- fun to load with big, fat bullets. Put's big ugly bruises on my shoulder .348 Winchester- introduced me to the Winchester/Browning 71 and expanded my shooting experience .450 Alaskan & .50 Alaskan- the results of my introduction to the .348 .338 Win Mag- comes in a semi-auto for big things that walk the earth .375 H&H- don't actually have one yet, but have always loved it .45 acp- favorite home defense round, went AWOL when the military switched to the 9mm and never looked back

Here are mine, .22long rifle hollow point. Great for taking out the pests that come in the back yard, possums, skunks etc. 22-250 the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. Great for prairie dogs etc. out to what for me are long ranges. Five shot group that can be covered with your little finger nail. 7MM mag. Takes just about everything in North America. .338 Win. Mag. for taking larger game and everything I have every tried for in Africa. 12 gage shotgun. Turkeys, pheasants you name it. M1 Garand, just plain fun to shoot .38 revolver for competition .45 ACP for semi auto competition

.22LR for all the reasons mentioned here. Cheap, pleasent, and not much it can't do 7.62x39-great plinking round, cheap and available .270 Win-my first hunting rifle, special place in my heart. IMO underrated as a hunting cartridge. It can take with authority anything up to and including elk and moose at ranges most of us should be shooting, and do it without punishing the shooter as well. .30/06-just cause my family has exponded on and proven it's merits. A true classic and one no rifle collection is complete without. 7mm Rem Mag-current favorite and the cartridge I hutn with now. To my liking, more versitile than the 06--combines the trajectory of the .270 with the recoil of the 06 and downrange energy that approaches the .300 Win. With a 175 Partition, nothing on this continent it can't handle, though I would be hesitant to use it on bigger bears. .44 Rem-powerful enough for most game with recoil most shooters can handle. May not be the most powerful anymore, but it will always be among our most useful. Also the 12 gauge and for defense, the .45 ACP.

Must have's: 22lr, '06, 12 ga, 45 ACP. Then (and only then) 6.5x55, 7x57, 8mm (A Mauser in each) 280 Rem, 358 STA, 416 Dakota (Win 70's, of course!) 308 Win (FAL (someday maybe AR-10!!) 45-70 (Marlin methinks) That's the plan, anyway! I'm afraid I'm missing the 3/8ths bore somehow.

My favorite of all would be a smoothbore 12ga shotgun with 2-3/4" rifled slugs. Kills'em dead and leaves a big hole (as long as your gun can shoot them good). As far as rifles I like the 30-06, a little boring but it gets the job done. I also like the 30-30 243 444 45-70 50 bp 303 308 7mm rem mag

30-30 Because it's not on this list enough, and it works. 303 British because it works on damn near anything 45-70 because it drops game as fast as it's trajectory drops it's bullets 338WM Because it's a long range thumper, that works up close too. 6.5X55, because it's so effective, it's surprising. 308, because it's not a 30-06, but works just as well

I like alot of different chamberings but my favs are: 280 rem...........probably the perfect 7mm! 375H&H............a true all around cartridge. Maybe its because I've killed about 90% of all my animals with one or the other!

quote:Almost the same as my 2 selections! I like the .375 H&H, but rather than the .280, I prefer the H&H's little brother the 7mm Rem Magnum. When you finally get some neck cracks in the .375, you make 7mm Mag cases from them! Both the .375 H&H and the 7mm Rem Mag are available in MANY places around the world, and the 7mm Rem Mag is a bit more common than the .280. I will admit the performance difference between the 2 7mm cartridges is not large, but I never have to change tools to seat my primers! jpb [ 03-21-2003, 15:11: Message edited by: jpb ]

Jpb, Well, there is certainly nothing wrong with the 7mag! I've started to use mine more and more lately as it is the most accurate rifle I own. Also, I can appreciate its flatter shooting with the heavier bullets. Thats why I said the 280 is PROBABLY the best 7mm. Just depends what day of the week it is!

I have 30 plus center fire rifles, and the calibers range from .223s to a.45-70. Although I only care to hunt deer and elk, I am fortunate that I generally have the opportunity to chase them in multiples states every year. I have killed a few of these critters with .270s, .30-30s, .30-06s, .444s etc., but the vast majority of the deer and elk that I have taken over the past 44 years have fell to either a .308 Win. or .300 Win. mag. Of late, I started to use a .35 Whelen, and it is a heck of a cartridge. So, for my purposes, the following can get all my work done: .308 Win. .300 Win. mag. .35 Whelen CP. I be a simple and poor man: 22 short 22lr in both pistol and rifle 223, 308, 7.62 x39, cheap, mil sup, but, since I don't have any of em, the 30-06 (for nearly anything)suffices. 375 H&H when shot placement is king. Pistol: 22lr 45 ACP Plus P carry 45 Super home defense along with 45 Linebaugh for hunting(325 grains at 1550, or, light hunting load, 260 grains at 1450 +) I think about buying a 458 Lott, and a 38 mag titanium, and figure the press is a better idea,...plus, if the 375 won't put it away, I still have 5 more rounds... I would like to have a 458 Lott, but wonder if I can shoot it as well as the 375. Puppy kicks with full house factory ammo, period. s

When it comes right down to it,from a performance standpoint, there is pratically no need for any cartridges developed after 1930. With a couple of exceptions. Everything from 25caliber and up was pretty well covered by that time. Military cartridges provided excellent performance on game as well. The 303, 30/40Krag, 30/06 and 8x57 are all fine medium bores. The 6.5x55 and 7x57 are good enough that newer cartridges were introduced to duplicate their performance. In the commercial cartridge arena 1930 had seen the introduction of everything we needed by that time. Heavy medium bore? it doesn't get much better than the 375 H&H. The American offering in this class was the 35 Newton which, if it were introduced today and called the rimless Magnum, would be a success. The 270 is still one of the finest long range cartridges. It was matched in performance by the 256 Newton. As I said there were some exceptions. The 22 centerfire class was populated mostly by wildcats until the advent of the 222. Legitimizing the 22-250 was definitely a good move. The 6mm caliber was ignored although the 25s accomplished the same thing. The other great later cartridge would have to be the 458 Winchester. It truly filled a gap in the market. I can hunt and compete with nothing but pre 1930 cartridges and not be handicapped at all. The only exception is in short range BR where a PPC or BR is just about mandatory. Regards, Bill.
