I had an incredible day Saturday. I got to do an almost impossible whitetail hunt for Texas. A good friend who leases 1800 acres of his ranch to 5 hunters called and said they were finished for the year and would I like to come up and do some hunting. I parked the truck and walked in and still hunted for 5 hours. I came on 3 bucks, stalked 2, and took a 2 1/2 year old 9 point. It is not the biggest buck in the woods, but I am sure proud of him. I was using my Rem 700 7mm-08 loaded with 140gr. Partitions.

This ranch is low fenced and also has free ranging blackbuck antelope. I guide blackbuck hunts for the rancher. This is why he lets me take an occasional deer for the freezer.

Good Hunting,

Bob

Bob,

Great deer! Looks like Saturday was good TX Hill Country hunting day. I took my 8-point the same day. Where is your buddies ranch? Mine is in Rocksprings, TX.

Nice buck, Bob.

I didn't pull the trigger this weekend but still have a bit of hunting to do. I know it's a ways off, but I am already getting anxious to have the buck I took last month back from the taxidermist.

Are you putting this one on the wall? (He is certainly worthy of it...)

Thanks Guys,

His ranch is near Barksdale and Campwood not too far from Rocksprings. The Partition did great-pass through-ran 30 yards and piled up. I am going to do an antler mount w/hair on. There is nothing like still hunting.

I am looking forward to some backstrap!!

Good Hunting,

Bob

Bob,
That's a nice deer and a great way to hunt.

I was able to do a lot of still hunting, walking and rattling on our old place in San Saba county. It was 700 acres but low fence (hell, hardly any fence at all) and it was a long 700 acres with canyons, draws etc. Great hunting.

How much do your black buck hunts run?

Regards,
Terry

Just for the record, there is a misconseption that Texas is all high fenced, and that is just not the case, High fenced hunting is not the norm in Texas...From Rock Springs to Del Rio to West Texas as for as El Paso, Marfa, Ft. Davis, Marathon and Alpine includes a lot of the panhandle and much of the Abalene, Pecos, Midland, Odessa and Kermit area is nothing more than 3 or 4 strand barb wire and ranches that go from 6000 acres to as many as 500,000 acres or more....

It is not hard to find an unfenced hunt in Texas. those fenced ranches are mostly on the Southern border and central Texas...and a few scattered throughout the state.

Ray is correct....gosh, did I really say that! [Big Grin]

You can find a lot of good low fenced hunts as well as leases. Check out DeerTexas.com for a start: DeerTexas.com Link

TerryP,

Those hunts were just $400. He wanted to cull them to keep them from tearing up his fences. I don't know if he is going to do any hunts this year. We took six bucks from 16" to 20" this year. Normally you can't find a hunt like this for under $1000. Unfortunately for the hunters, the high fenced ranch on one side of his ranch has been baiting them in and trapping them.

Good Hunting,

Bob

Here are a couple from this year:

Nice buck Bob,

I'm impressed with the 7mm-08. my daughters use it for deer and antelope and we used it this year
to get a cow elk's attention as well!
