Just make sure the bear you shot has a hump on his shoulders... Wink and while you're at it shoot a few of those extra large coyotes that live up there in you're back yard. Big Grin

Enjoy you're hunt.

I baited my barrel couple days back, will refill every couple days now. I don't get too excited about bear but got to do my patriotic duty and try and keep their numbers down. My son gets home from school on the 14th, he likes killing one every spring with his bow. I can walk to my stand from the house so kinda no big deal. Bear are really no more than pests to us.

Most of our interior blk bear are small, 250-300 lbs. I did see a nice cinnamon last year that was a little bigger. We always get a few grizz come off the summit looking to cause trouble every May; but even our grizz are small 600-800 lbs; though they do look quite big to me up close. I always save bacon grease, use ladder to smear it all over the trees nx to barrel. Kinda brings them in, also rotten salmon eggs really brings them running.

The boy has an Italian kid for a room mate. He never hunted in Italy; so the my son invited him up to kill a bear; ha. Hope he comes, give the kid a chance to kill his first bear.

Hey ravenr
What kind of saddle are you riding?
Looks like maybe a McCall's "Wade" saddle?
Nice looking country you are in there.
Tell us a bear story!

last night was buzy in the bear woods
about 5pm spotted a big orange cinammon boar and made a run on him,got one ridge away when the wind shifted and blew the stalk.
hope i didn't run him out of the country
as he IS the bear i would love to hang my tag on.
returned to my perch for the rest of the evening and a couple hours later spotted a small framed bear(guessing sow) on the same ridge.
watched her for the next hour and packed it in for home.
be at it again tonight, more tomorrow perhaps,
thanks for all the good luck wishings

Yes I know what you mean about your saddle. Does your local saddle maker just sell a few or is he crankin' them out and who is he?
I couldn't tell if the swells on it were added on or were part of the build up.

The Plains have been windy, windy and cold, windy and snowy, windy and warm windy and foggy, pretty much windy............. I hate the wind. Real warm today and supposed to get snow or snow and rain over the next 3 days. We've been getting the horses out a bit and went for a ride on Mothers Day and saw deer and antelope, no griz!
Wish I could still hunt Spring Bear here in Colorado but we lost that fight several years back, more Bears here than people know what to do with so the city people call the "police" when a bear shows up.
Keep us posted on your hunt and tell a good Bear story.

saddle maker has passed on,had this one built about 25 yrs ago.
he used to build a couple dozen a yr.
know what you mean about colorado bears
the yr i hunted with general swartzkoff
5 of us guides counted 100+ bears in 5 days
i'm sure some were counted twice but even 50
is a hell of a bear population.
last night was windy and cold thou i did see
the little sow again.
doesn't look any prettier for tonight
but if she is going to hang out on that mt side i'm going back, her boy friend is going to show up sooner or later.
i've got a magic pill for him that will transform him into a BIG pumpkin colored rug!!

Are you getting any of this storm, we have 15" of snow on the ground and it's still snowing now.

Hope to see you in Cody May 22, good luck on you're bear hunt.

when i pulled out last night it hadn't started
to stick yet, just couldn't see,but its white this morning.
no grizzlies were harmed in the photo op.
walked into the one in the 2nd griz pic at 75 yds, took the pic and sicced the heeler on him
dog would of chased him over the top of the mt.
but i whistled him off at 150
i'm dissappointed i won't be in town on the 22nd,
i'm headed to n.m. to do some work; horn
hunting and camping with the wife.
i have the reinforcements on hand to cover me
the last week of bear hunting has been good concidering the crappy weather, have seen 11
bears 7 griz and 4 blacks.
at least the rain/snow keeps the ticks and
sketters down.
supposed to be in the 60s tomorrow and 75 by the weekend, watch out for the run-off

Speaking about N.Mex a couple of us are headed down to hunt blk bear in 2011 or 2012 with hounds after were all done with our clients for the season (late October). If you're interested you are more than welcome to go with us. We are just going down for a week to ten days hopefully to enjoy a good race or two.
I've seen some huge bears when I would bow hunt for elk.

i'm pretty sure we are talking about the same thing thou i have never heard the term
buckin rolls.
when your pony bogs his head and goes to buckin you thrust your feet forward and the "tits" lock your thighs in so you don't go out over his head when his front feet impact the ground.

well,i didn't kill one for myself but instead
took my nephew.
he had a pile of unused bear licenses dating back to 1996 and last night killed his first and joined the ranks of bear hunters.
we were walking into a great chunk of country
headed for the "perch" when the bear was spotted 300 yds above in an open slide.
clay sprawled out over a boulder the size of a
pickup and took a prone position over his backpack and thou it took a couple shots
he got it done.
i gotta say it was the end to a great spring season,he was still shaking like a leaf an hour later and likened it to being there when his first child was born.
it made my season seeing the excitment
written on his face and watching him examine every inch, every claw, teeth, eyes, ears, pelt, hair color as this was the first bear he had ever been close to.i showed him how to skin his bear and got out of the way so he could.
i know killing one for myself couldn't top last night so i will probably hang up the bear hunting till fall, good luck to the rest of you and safe travels

Joe,

Great little story. Congrats to you and your nephew.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
