Dave Baxter took a huge bison in Custer State Park, South Dakota. The free range bull beat the B&C minimum by more than 11".
You can see him on the Hunting Report website under E-mail Extra Bulletins at www.huntingreport.com

The Custer hunt is one of the great free range bison hunts in the US. The terrain is beautiful and there are a lot of bison. It's about as close to an old time buffalo hunt as you can find. It's not cheap, but it's a real hunt and you're probably only going to do it once.

he recent accomplishment of subscriber Dave Baxter. Last December, at Custer State Park in South Dakota, Baxter took a fair chase bison that didn't simply squeak its way into Boone & Crocket; it exceeded the minimum by a whopping 11 6/8 points. The B & C minimum is 115, and his trophy scored 126 6/8. Just feast your eyes on Baxter's fine trophy!

I believe he's a non-resident. Anybody can do the hunt, but it's on a very limited draw basis. Absolutely beautiful setting. And a huge area. Truly free range.
And thanks to vapodog for the photo. It's all I can do to type this.

Residents pay the same amount I beleive. It was $4500.

I haven't looked in a while.

It's a nice deal, as your guided and they help with you meat removal.

You also get to hunt on Custer state park at a time of year when most people don't go there. They have elk, sheep, mule and whitetail deer, pronghorns, and lots of turkeys.

Kind of a general bag photo safari as well.

If everything goes well that will be me in a few years. One of my dreams is to be able to make it on a true free range bison hunt. Man is that bull beautiful.

Hey guys, I am Dave Baxter, and I'm glad Daggaboy liked my article and bison enough to mention it here. Interestingly, my bull wasn't the biggest taken at Custer State Park last year. And, undoubtably, larger bulls are killed on various ranches across the country every year. BUT...most of these trophies are inelligible for entry into the B&C book because of the "canned" connotation that these ranch hunts usually carry. So, if one wants a fair chase opportunity for a bison that will make the book, I believe that Custer is the place to go. Many of you may know of other places that are also book-elligible, but I don't...

If you want to read my article, go to the Dallas Safari Club website: biggame.org. Then click on News and Publications, click on Camp Trails newsletter, and then click on the August, 2008, issue. The entire article can read from that site. Enjoy....

Again, I am flattered that my story was mentioned here. Regards, Dave
