Folks, This is a topic i've never even considered. However, my pops retired last year and is taking many more hunting trips in the coming years. He asked me to look into travel/hunt insurance in case something comes up last minute and he cannot make a hunt. Have any of you used this? is it worth a damn? who would you recommend? thank you john

I have bought travel insurance one time and I can not see myself doing it ever again. I won't go into the the details too much-- but we were weather delayed on a trip in Alaska and the travel insurance covered nothing for us without extensive proof-- which is hard when you are stuck in an airport in Alaska. To make matters worse, the travel insurance cancelled our tickets (without a refund to my card), making changing the tickets to a later flight nearly impossible. It was a mess. Never again. I say book hunts with people who are willing to work with you if an emergency arises. If the change of plans is a matter of convenience- well then just eat the costs if the other activity is more important.

How does travel insurance cancel one's ticket? I am trying to understand. Insurance is expensive only when it isn't needed. As with all insurance , look at what is covered and perhaps more importantly, what is excluded.

That is a great question Larry. What appears to have happened is when we missed our flight the insurance kicked in. I don't know how or why, but the process cancelled our tickets. Since we didn't have current/missed-flight tickets, the agent at the ticket counter could not reissue us tickets. And the insurance did not refund the tickets to my credit card. The others from our lodge simply walked up to the counter and were handed new boarding passes because their tickets were still currently in the system. Not me and my son. The agent at the airport could not help us. I had to make an hours worth of calls to get everything worked out. All I know is that I would hate to be in a foreign country trying to get that straightened out. In the end, we were never reimbursed for the travel issues and extra expenses incurred. I guess I should have taken an hour or three and read all of the "fine print". I'm really not that upset as the cost was only about $80 or so-- it just created a headache and stress at the time. I'd like to hear from someone who filed a travel insurance claim and were successful in being made whole.

Travel-Guard took really good care of me the one time I filed a claim. I was in Florida fishing when my Mother died and I had to get to NC in the middle of my trip. Travel-Guard changed flights, arranged new rental car, even reimbursed all pre-paid resort charges I had incurred. They called 2-3 times over the next week asking if they could do more. I spent a few hours scanning and emailing paperwork afterwards but was really pleased with their service. I use them now for nearly all domestic vacations and using Ripcord for Zim in Sept. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Give me the simple life; an AK-47, a good guard dog and a nymphomaniac who owns a liquor store.

Seems odd to me. I have purchased the coverage a few times. I purchased my tickets and my coverage separately. Perhaps that is where the difference lies. At least in my case, there was never anyway the insurer could cancel my tickets. I can imagine that it was stressful.
