My 17 year old daughter has been hunting hard with me for black bear for the last few years. She has had the worst luck. Spot and stalk bears in our neck of the woods is a time game and she has definitely put in the time. Just not enough of it apparently. I’ve killed a few but always when I was out alone. Friday she says to me: Dad, I’ll even kill a little bear. I just want to find one. I laughed and said that’s what you told me last fall before we hunted whitetails and you killed a toad.

It’s been cold and not the best bear hunting weather, and it’s early, but the sun was out Monday night when I got home from work. She was washing her truck in the driveway when I pulled in and I said tonight is the night do you want to go? She jumped at the chance.

There are little south facing meadows I check this time of year that just start to green up earlier than anything else. We hiked in, checked the first one and bumped a little bear off of the meadow. You can make a mistake approaching a lot of game in my experience. A black bear in high density grizzly country is not one of them. They don’t even hesitate or look at noise. Any noise. They just bolt.

We continued to check other spots and then looped back to check this same meadow an hour or so later picking a better route in. Sure enough there was a bear on it but with the size of the meadow and heavy timber and undergrowth I just knew it was black.

It took 20 minutes to work our way to within 50 yards of him. By now I knew he was a good one. As good as this area produces. She got a rest leaning against a tree and when he cleared the trees he was feeding around she shot him. He went 25 yards.

Really enjoy your dad / daughter hunt reports. Congrats to your girl taking such a good and well deserved bear.
I have spotted and stalked Black Bears in BC. Absolutely loved it every time.

Outstanding job, Dad!

I was fortunate to be involved with both of my older daughter's, and Wifezilla's first deer and it's something that I'll never forget.

A hearty congratulations to you and your daughter. Well done Dad!
