DNR To Trap Wolves In Jackson County
Agency Says It Has To Address Safety Concerns

AAA
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The state Department of Natural Resources plans to trap a pack of wolves in Jackson County because they have become too familiar with humans.

The Leader-Telegram in Eau Claire reported officials have confirmed that a wolf from the Bear Bluff Pack injured a German shorthair pointer on Sept. 18.

According to the DNR, the wolf approached a hunter within 50 feet, and the animal got in front of the man's vehicle when he got in.

It is believed to be the first verified wolf attack on a bird-hunting dog in Wisconsin.

The pack has approached people numerous times despite attempts from wildlife officials to keep wolves away from cranberry beds and areas of human activity.

But the DNR said they have to use lethal control actions to address safety concerns.

I'm afraid that what it is going to take to get the wolf-management issue out of the courts and into Congress for statutory action is for a human to suffer death via an unprovoked attack. Losses of livestock and dogs doesn't seem to be enough to get Congress to wade into this.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit if they 'accidentally' captured a few extra.

And why did our ancestors from the 19th century and early 20th century eradicate the wolf from the lower 48 states?

Sincerely,
