I should try taking one with archery sometime, I dont really have a very good bow setup, all I ever shoot with it is carp. I guess it would still probably work for deer but Ill have get some different arrows, I dont think the solid fiberglass one would shoot very flat and Im sure a doe would break my 80lb nylon line. I need to find out for sure If I can still get on the land that I hunted last year, if I can Im going to put in for 2 more tags I think.
I currently have 4 tags for here in Iowa, and I will hunt Wisconsin this year which has the earn a buck program, where you have to shoot a doe to get a buck tag. I will also hunt Texas for hogs and deer, but will leave what ever meat I collect, with my kids down there. If I fill all my Iowa tags, I can get more antlerless tags at $11 a piece. There is definately no shortage of deer here. Hope everyone has a great season!
I would shoot so many of them until my gun barrel would be so hot I could boil water with it Well take advantage of it cause if you ever move out west you might be lucky enough to hunt two deer a year in some states with one being and Buck tag and the other if you are lucky enough to draw a doe tag heck consider yourself lucky if you get drawn for a buck tag. Well have to go I will continue with this later. I'm back a lot of us out west are envious of you guys that are over ran with deer it would provide a good opportunity for youths and first time hunters. When it comes time to hunt instead of worrying about finding a buck there first deer could be a doe and afterwards worry about getting a buck. I would gladly pay 20 bucks a pop to hunt deer.
I wish I could afford the tags to take an extra 10 and donate them to be processed for hungry families but at 20 bucks a pop they get a little spendy. I emailed an official at the game and fish dept to see if there was any way they would issue tags that are only for donation for free or at a significantly reduced charge but I havent heard back yet. Im guessing the answer will be a big fat NO but its worth a try, hehe.
In my part of Michigan you can take 2 baucks and pretty much as many does as you want to buy tags for. $4 a pop. My family is not overly keen on venison so 1 deer is good for us. After that I usually try and take 3 or 4 and donate them through our statewide Sportsman Against Hunger Group. I consider these programs to be a great thing. People who are needy get the meat, it helps the herd by giving hunters more incentive to shoot does, and it is terrific PR for hunters. There are always several articles in the papers each fall. Whitetail populations are certainly a problem in many areas and it's difficult to get hunters to shoot enough. I understand that. Shooting a doe means the days hunt is over plus I now have to dress the deer, get it out of the woods, etc. I have to admit there are a lot of days that I pass up shots because I don't feel like dealing with it. Other times I don't want to screw up a crack at a good buck.

Up here where I'm from, after you fill both tags, you can then buy anouther permit for $28.00 & allowed two more, & so on & so on, until the season is closed. How ever, no matter how many permits you get, you are only aloud 1 buck. Not 1 buck per permit, 1 buck all together. The year before last7 I tagged 11 deer just with one of my muzzleloaders.
As for getting sick over deer meat, it ain't happened yet. I just cook it differant each time, plus I smoke alot of it as well. I usually smoke 3 to 4 deer a year. Man do it love it smoked.

Boghassian brings up a great point. I hunt with Bow, rifle, pistol, and ML. Last three years have taken game with them all.
Last year specifically, I took three with a bow, one with a .41 Mag revolver, one with an ML, one with a .470 NE Searcy double rifle, and one with a 9.3x74R Chapuis double rifle.
Makes for great fun, lots of learning in the field, and a challenging season.
As for getting tired of venison ... no more so than we get tired of beef. We've yet to see any "gamey" venison so it gets cooked pretty much like lean beef.
Shoot what you want, or can use, or donate. As far as proper storage, try putting the meat in a thin plastic bag, then wrapping in freezer paper. It will keep w/o freezer burn for 2 years or more.
I'm lucky if I even see a deer, but our state allows for 2 deer taken. If I was allowed as many as I want. I'd shoot as many bucks as I could until my taxidermy bill starts getting to be a bit much. I'm always happy to get a new head on the wall. I'd probably keep a deer, but I'd donate most of it to friends or the hungry. At the moment though, I'd just be happy to see a deer this year.
