I really like the idea of a single big game load for my .270, but I wonder how deep penetrating premium bullets will perform on smaller deer. Will bullets like Partitions, Trophy Ponded, Accubonds, and X-Bullets drop smaller big game quickly. I current shoot 140 grain Ballistic Tips and have been very please.

I used a 200 grain A-Frame (300 H&H) on a doe last year.....not because it was needed but because it was what I had.

It worked as expected.....dead deer...and ate fine.

Ya got em...use em!!

If you are happy why change?

My brother has been putting down several SC deer with a 110 TSX in his .270. Dumps them on impact.

I just got in 2 boxes of 130 grain partitions for one of my 270s.

While I cannot comment on the others, a Nosler Partition will work very well on deer sized game.

One of the most spectacular kills I ever saw was in Wyoming. We were hunting deer and elk so my buddy had a 7mm Rem Mag loaded with 160 Nosler Partitions. He shot a nice buck that was running like hell at about 250 yards. That deer did a wonderfull somersault and died instantly!

Last fall I shot a forked horn buck here in CA with my 300 Wby Mag using 180 Nosler Partitions.
I was using that load because of the chance at a good black bear in the same area. I shot the buck at about 80 yards going away at a little of an angle. The bullet went in just ahead of the right hip and darned near exited the chest.
That buck just slid on his side and died right on the spot.

I am sure the Ballistic Tips are working for you, but do not hesitate to shoot the Partitions, they work.

I have shot several antelope with my 25-06 using the 100 grain Nosler Partition and have been quite pleased every time.

I started using 130gr Barnse XLC in my 270 several years ago I've killed 12 deer since the change all droped in their tracks. The shots were for 50 yds to 350 yds.

I've used all of the bullets you mentioned except the TB. They've never let me down. For all around use, I like the Partition.

From a .270 would you shoot a 140 grain Barnes Triple Shock or the 140 grain Nosler Accubond?

Having put both the TSX and AB into game from a 270, I'd most certainly go with the TSX!

I do not shoot the 140 myself, I shoot the 130. Remember, it is a long for weight/caliber bullet and the 130 TSX IMO performs as well as other 140 grain bullets. JMO though.

We just finshed deer season I was in on the killing of around 14 deer from 70lbs to 150lbs.

They were all shot with standard grade hunting bullets rems. ,hornadays, speers some surplus 8x54 russian and a 110gr M1 carbine. They all died nicely.

If one wants to spend his money shooting deer with premium hunting bullets my all means go ahead but they are not needed.

I started hunting mule deer with the 270 Win. some 27 years ago. I started with 130 gr. Sierras, then went to 130 gr. Speer Grand Slams. I couldn't count on either one of them to stay together without blowing up.

I then went to 130 gr. Nosler Partitions loaded to 3150 fps. around 1981, and I've never looked back. Of all the big game loads I've worked with over the years, this one remains one of the best and most effective I've ever used. It pretty-much follows Jack O'Connor's and John Jobson's original load recipes that get the utmost out of the 270 Win. cartridge.

It really doesn't matter the size of the deer in question, this 130 Nosler Partition load ends things quickly, and minimizes tissue damage.

Premium bullets work better, period.......

I have shot quite a few whiletails with a mild loaded 7mm RM that had a 22" tube. Most of the deer were bucks but only average in size and the distances were in the 50 to 300 ft range. Most of the shot locations were good and just over the heart. Many of these deer either dropped or fell and got up and fell again nearby. The bullets were the 140 Sierra Pro Hunter, Speer 130 gr Hot Core, Remington 150 Corelokt and the 140 Partition. Maybe I did not look all that close at the bullet action but I never noticed any bullet blow up. All of the deer were dead and none ever went far.

Now that I have joined AR I have many premium bullets and I am using them at times. At this point I see little differance on medium sized deer.

I have shot many deer with the 358 Win using 180 and 200 gr soft points. Premium bullets are not needed at all on deer using that range of bullet weights in the 358 up to 200 yds.

Brent,

My 270 Winchester reloaded w/ IMR-4350 has a velocity chrono'd at 10' and 100 to 500 calculated from JBM balistics:

Wt. Grains = 150
Bullet Type = Sierra GameKing
B. C. = 0.483
MV 10' = 3,025
100 yds= 2,832
200 yds= 2,647
300 yds= 2,469
400 yds= 2,300
500 yds= 2,136

My reload above figures to be 6.2 inches low at 300 yards when sighted in at 200 yards. A 270 Weatherby load from their web site figures to be only 5.3 inches low at 300 yards.

Try the 150 SGK! I've never missed a deer and never need a follow-up shot! (Knock-on-Wood)
