Ray - You may be talking about some of the old patriarch bucks I am talking about. One possible weakness I may have noticed is early in the morning (which was usually when I was normally flying thru the area) the big bucks liked to get on the sunny side of their little hilltops out of the wind and soak up the warming sun.

That early morning sun makes them easy to spot if a fellow knows what he's looking for. And if you knew they were there on that hill, a guy might be able to move in for a shot if the wind gods were agreeable. Either come up behind them and jump them pretty close or possibly move up from the east while the sun was in their eyes.

Most likely it's a situation where a fellow is just going to have to make a long shot. But there are sure some deer out there worth the trouble for the hale and hearty.

I was sitting strenuously in a tree stand and that rascal was walking through the woods and entered one of my precut shooting lanes. The bullet entered just in front of his right knee. I found the lead core just inside the hide on the left shoulder.

Got this big boy back in '98, possibly the buck of a lifetime. Haven't topped him yet, although I'm not going to quit trying. Hunting big muleys is a special passion of mine, & the fire hasn't cooled even slightly. Maybe that's why it never snows in this frickin' state anymore....
But, to re-live past glories;

Here is a picture of my largest Whitetail. It was officially scored and entered into the Pope and Young Record book with a registered score of 142-1/8. The deer was taken by Bow and arrow in Langlade County Wisconsin in early October 1990 with a single arrow at 28 yards from a tree stand. The deer was hit in the upper shoulder with approxiamately 11" penetration and did not leave a blood trail due to the high entrance wound with no exit hole. I enlisted a local trapper to help in the tracking and the deer was tracked by upset leaves on the ground and on bushes The deer went an estimated 450 yards. The deer was weighed at 235 pounds field dressed, estimated live weight at 320 pounds. The inside spread was roughly 19" with beam lenghts of 24", it was a near perfect 10 point and only 2 1/4" of antler score being deducted on the typical score sheet. Point of interest the afternoon this deer was taken had high winds with gusts approaching 40mph , the deer was walking along a swamp in route to feeding fields.

A FEW YEARS BACK I SHOT A NICE WHITETAIL IN SASK-
KATCHEWAN USING A .257 IMP AND 120 GRAIN GRAND SLAM BULLETS. THE DEER WAS HIT IN THE LIVER AND
HE RAN ABOUT 100 YARDS.

THE DEER GROSSED 191 B & C AND MADE THE BOOK AS
A TIPICAL AS WELL AS A NON-TIPICAL. HE WEIGHTED
264# FIELD DRESSED. FOR POINTS, ONE CAN COUNT
15 OR 13 DEPENDING ON ONES DEFINATION OF A POINT.

THE DEER HAS A 29 1/2 INCH INSIDE SPREAD WITH
6 1/2 INCH BASES. HE IS STILL CARRYING 5" OF MASS
AT THE TIP OF HIS HORNS.

I HAVE CONTINUED TO HUNT SASKATCHWAN AND ALBERTA
BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO TOP THIS DEER.

I"ve never takem what I would consider a big deer if all we are talking about if mulies and whitetail etc... But if we can add elk, then we're talking a different game.

My biggest had 5 pts right antler and 6 pts on the left. Main beam right antler 47 inches, main beam left antler 49 inches. Lots of mass throughout. Rifle used was a Rem 700 ADL in 7mm Mag with handloaded ammo. Bullet took the bull in the middle of the neck and the animal dropped to the shot. Not very far on the shot, maybe 100 yds which is why I went for the neck. Animal was in the open and if I botched the neck shot I could have put at least 1 more in the chest before he made it to the timber. Have no idea what he scored, I've never tried to score anything I've taken. Good bull though. His carcass weighed 422 lbs hanging dressed with head, skin, lower legs removed.

The biggest deer I ever shot was a Whitetail with some real genetic problems. I used a doe tag on him because he had no visible antlers. Actually he did have one antler growing down the side of his head about 6" long, and the other was a stub. He was an old toothless buck and stunk bad; I smelled him before I saw him. Meat had to be fed to the dogs. He weighed somewhere over 300 lbs. shot with a 7 MM RM at around 30 yds. I have a picture, but it's not worth seeing.

2001, shot in South Dakota. 9x8 non-typical whitetail. Shot with my old Remington 600 in 6mm. One of my handloads, a 55 gr. Nosler BT. hit right in the numbers. Ran 80 yards, stopped, and dropped. 22 inch inside spread, 25 inch main beams. What a dandy! I'll never forget it.

My best deer. Sonora, Mexico 1997. Shot him on the 5th day of a 7 day hunt with a .280 at about 175 yards. I hit him in the heart and he ran 100 yards and dropped. Got it all on video thanks to my good friend, Richard Owens of AZ. When I walked up on this deer there was no ground shrinkage. I was literally acting like a little kid. His outside spread is 37 3/4 and he scored 205 typical B&C. This was a super hunt as I also shot a B&C Coues Deer. Since this hunt I have not shot another mulie here in MT. I'm starting to get the itch so I think it's time to go south again...................
