Europeans hunters who have booked a hunt for grizzly bear this spring in
the Canadian province of British Columbia may want to cancel their trips,
as the European Union has just banned the import of BC grizzly bear
trophies. There is a chance the decision will be reversed this spring, but
at the moment hunters in all member countries of the European Union are
affected.

The decision is troubling for a number of reasons. For one thing, it
indicates a readiness on the part of EU officials to listen to one-side
presentations and err on the side of protection in matters relating to
wildlife. At this point, pro-hunting officials say they do not even know
what kind of information the EU received before making its abrupt decision
to stop all grizzly imports. Will other such trophy import bans be enacted?
The EU as a political entity is still finding its way. This early
indication of an anti-hunting bias is very troubling indeed.

Another worry about the recent decision is the impact it will have on BC
officials, who just reopened grizzly hunting in the face of widespread
anti-hunting opposition. There is no immediate cause of alarm, and hunters
from outside the European Union are urged not to cancel their hunts. But,
longer term, if the EU ban is allowed to go forward, it is sure to increase
pressure on the province to close this hunt down again.

Conservation Force's John J. Jackson, III told us today that he is already
working with FACE (Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation
of the EU) officials to get the decision reversed. He said there is no
question to ultimate intent of the ban is to force BC to re-close grizzly
hunting. "The hunting community has got to fight this move," Jackson said.
"We're gearing up now, and will keep you posted."

This doesn't come as a surprise to us swedish hunters. The EU has already banned our traditional hunt for woodcocks in the early summer. This was done without a thorough research but on very flimsy grounds.

The problem with all this "the EU made us do it" is that decisions in Brussels are often made before the affected people have the time to react. At the current (and rising)level of anti-hunting tendencies in western Europe this could take a very bad turn for the worse if we don't stand up for our rights.
