I am going to buy a new rifle, cal .300 Win Mag ... My choice has to de done in between a Winchester model 70 XTR or a Ruger M 77 stainless.

Accuracy is just outstanding in both models, so my decision has to be taken based only in these two models pros and cons ...

Which one would you choose and why ?

Regards,

Go with the Winchester. For me the decision would not even be close.

Accuracy may be outstanding but the Rem 700 would be more accurate...assuming "accuracy" is your prime concern why not consider the 700? There are a hell of a lot more custom and benchrest rifles built on the 700 than both of the others together.

The Ruger 77 except in 338 win mag instead of 300 win mag.It has way more knockdown power.I have a win model 70 338 stainless.it sucks most trouble I have had with a gun.Scope mounts are drilled crooked,it rusted before I took it outside,It failed to feed at all till I replaced follower, spring and floor plate. It has several other problems too its union made for sure.I have had nothing but good things with my 338 stainless Rugers. Its accurate 3/4" at 200 yards, dependable never jams or rust. Its a tough accurate gun.You can buy my wonderful model 70 338 with a boss on it.

I went with thr Ruger stainless about three years ago. What finally sold me was that it was the only stainless rifle I could find with open sights. That way, if my scope breaks, I am still hunting.

In fact I have a Remington M700 custom shop in .375 H&H (KS mountain rifle) which is my favourite and primary hunting rifle ... having both a .300 and a .375 I think a 338 might be somehow redundant ....

The whole story is that the Winchester M70 XTR is already mine and I have been offered the Ruger M77 as an exchange for it ... I know the XTR is not longer made and some even say they will be the next collectibles, but... THAT ruger seems to be calling me by my name since I first saw it Cool Big Grin - and somehow I never liked shooting the XTR very much (I think its stock is its major drawback, I shoot both my .375 & .416 quite comfortably, without feeling the recoil as much as I do with the XTR) so I have been thinking in trading it for a while ... last sunday while shooting at the yard I made this comment to a fellow hunter and he offered me the exchange .... but I want to make a rational decision, not only based in my disgust ...

Almost forget: in my country the M77 costs as much as twice than the XTR Eeker

So, what would you do ? Roll Eyes Confused

Like I said in the identical post you made, Ruger.

Why not a Winchester? do you want to take a chance that your rifle was built by some worker that was ticked off that he was going to be unemployed REAL SOON?

I wouldn't touch a recent production winchester...

Your not kidding about recient winchesters I got some from calelas .It looks like a drunk built them. The stocks on the 94s are wooden and have the new sliding feature. It will slide 1/2".I like the 338 and 416 as the best pair.I actually boosed it to 338-378 weatherby and a 416 Remington.I still deer hunt just about always with my Ruger 338 win mag.It tears up way less meat than the 300 win mag.I had a 300 win mag I hated it.It was accurate but I could nev er find the right bullets for deer. They either blew up the 150 grs or zipped through :the 180 gr Nosler partition and the 180 ge winchester power point.I love the 200 gr power points for deer in my 338.I had a 30-06 and a 300 win mag they over lap too much. The 338 is a step above the 300s and way above the 30-06.I like the 338 and up for stuff that bites and stomps. If its thick and close I take out the 416 rem mag.

My Winchester XTR was made some twenty five years ago ... it is a fine rifle, but we never understood each other very well Roll Eyes Wink...
my confusion is not from a ballistic point of view, but when considering those two rifles from a purely practical view, side by side ....

Nevertheless, thank you very much for all your answers ...

BTW, Mike (dgr416), have you already sold all your books ?

Regards,
Martin

Ruger....ditto the comments from DGR416...our local gun shop got some model 70's in right before Christmas and had to send most of them back (something like 8 out of 10 as I was told by the gun dept. mgr.). Said the company told him they would replace with similar valued Brownings!

I have to say that the quality of the modern
rifle is very poor these days. With Winchesters recent announcement I would question
what the future is for this company. From personal experience I won't own anything but custom. I support my feelings with another rifle that came into my shop last week. The Winchester you refered too already. The trigger was two stag (Not made that way) I adjusted it to the correct setup and found it was incredibly rough. Guess that is why someone
backed the spring pressure off? I spent time
buffing the bearing surfaces and a piece of metal came off the sear. (Air pocket) I was able to salvage it though.

My personal feelings are that if you and I are going to put out these kind of bucks why put out more money to make it work correctly.
Ruger is okay with Kimber super.

I know that its a long ways away from a .300 win mag but I have a standard RugerM77 who's factory .243win barrel would consistantly shoot .4"5-shot groups @ 100yds and 1.5" 5-shot groups @300yds with handloads (with certain premium factory ammo, it would shoot .5"3shot groups at 100yds). THe barrel started to lose its accuracy around 1200rnds and Im now having it replaced w/ a lilja after 1500 rnds--at that point the good ol' barrel could still usually manage an inch@100yds but it was too late, I had already been spoiled Wink. I love the looks of all of the various M77's but prefer the plain jane walnut(Im keeping the handsome, but well-worn factory stock w/ the new barrel--our friendship just wouldnt be the same w/out it
Roll Eyes). I have owned 3 M77's (2 of which I still own) and all have functioned flawlessly and been very accurate. ---Rock solid, quality American workmanship is still present in Ruger rifles.
Happy hunting, Drew Stuart

Ruger!

Brute strength, the best/simplest scope mounting system is included and it's a very rugged and durable rifle. I've had no trouble with any of my Rugers. All my sporting bolt rifles are now Rugers...

I've got a stainless/synthetic All Weather in 30-06 and LOVE IT. Hunting all day in drenching rain? Just lean it in the corner when you get back to camp and let it air-dry with the action open!

I own both, in other calibers...

The Ruger can just be beat around all the time..

So can the Winchester, but it is a more polished finish as a rifle to it... so I tend to baby it more.....

The Ruger I am not as picky about....

So whichever your school of thought runs to...

cheers
