I would like to try for an American Bison in 2013 or 14. Anyone with any experience or contacts would be appreciated.

Hoss, contact Routier Outfitting in South Dakota. Hunted with them this past Feb. Free ranging hunt on big ranch. Not a small pasture shoot like some offer. Great family. They do all the guiding. Good eating also. We'll be going back as soon as we eat the rest of this one.Get a hold of Randy Routier 605-375-3306.

Save the money and do it for real. It will cost you a chunk of change, but it's worth it. Contact Tim Mervyn at www.yukonsheep.com. Wood Bison are importable now I believe and Tim's area is incredible enough that it matches his work ethic.

I think Az has a tough Public land hunt for Free range Bison. I vaguely remember Chuck Adams writing about it being one of the toughest hunts in Arizona.

Utah has at least 2 huntable free ranging bison herds. One is on Antelope Island and the other is in the Henry Mountains. The permits are once in a lifetime and are allocated in an annual drawing. Good luck.

You might call Don Petersen at Petersen Trophy Hunts in Avon Utah. They do have a web site and if the hunt is done in November the hides are in excellent condition and the meat just as good. The Bison are in a high fenced piece of challenging terrain that is just under 5000 acres. Hunted on foot these Bison will give you all the exercise you will want to expend in looking for one.

Just an observation here, but Hoss12 does not comment about how old he is or his physical shape. While the draw hunts that were listed are real adventures, what are the odds of drawing a tag?????? I believe that Hay-Man and tendrams are on the right track on this one. Again, just my opinion.

There are several public herds in the US. Arizona has two, Utah now has two, Alaska has a couple, and South Dakota has the Custer State Park Herd. With the exception of the latter, all of near impossible to draw inside of two decades of trying (I have nine points toward a Utah tag currently and know I have at least 9 years left before I draw). The Custer hunt, while much easier to draw, now runs $5000 for the tag I believe and is really only a quasi-wild herd anyway. B&C eligible? Yes, but not the amazing hunt that some might hope for. Hunts in BC, the Yukon, and Alberta provide that wild element in spades but at a price. Most hunts there start at about $8000 for the Alberta option and go up from there. I don't know for sure but I would bet Tim Mervyn is charging close to $10K now if not a bit more. To put that in perspective, if you tried to buy a Utah tag at a sports show you would almost assuredly pay more than that...and not get a guide with it. Sure, all this is expensive but you eventually get to look at a big old bull on the wall and know you did it right.

You didn't say if you wanted a trophy bison or a meat bison. If you're looking for a meat hunt, take a look at the Twin Pines Ranch in WY. I'm away from home so I don't have the number or website handy but you can google it.

My family has done 6 or 7 meat hunts there over the years. They do the hunt right. The ranch is very large and scenic. The bison are spread across it and there is no "just drive up and shoot it" on the ranch.

Run fast and far from the Crow hunt. An acquaintance who is high up in B&C got totally ripped off on that deal. Whatever possessed them to steal from a potentially great marketing opportunity, I have absolutely no idea.

Great information, thanks for the help. I probably do not have enough time left to go for the draw, and probably am not willing to spend the dollars you mention for a trophy hunt. So, a meat hunt may be the way to go for me. I am 54, would not call myself athletic, but have hunted elk at 9000 ft plus elevation mostly afoot the last few years. This is what I appreciate about the forum, most folks are more than willing to offer useful info. Again thanks for the input. hoss

I believe Custer State Park also still offers non-trophy hunts. Used to be that these were offered on a smaller fenced area of the park so they were not really too different from a ranch hunt. If they would open those NT hunts up to the full expanse of the park (and they may have by now) this would be a great inexpensive alternative to their $5000 trophy bull hunt. Just something worth probably checking out.

If you find anything out about a decent, affordable meat hunt please keep us informed. I been planning on one of these myself and would love to fill the freezer with one I popped with a double rifle or big bore revolver.

Randy Routier posted before I could reply with his info. I do not know Randy, have not hunted with him, someone else on this post recommended him I believe. Seems like a good possibility of a cow/meat hunt and a reasonable cost for a bull. thanks for all the input

This may not be what your looking for but I did a bull bison hunt on a hunting preserve in florida. I would have loved to due a true free range hunt but could not justify the cost or waiting a long time to be drawn for a once in a lifetime hunt. The bull cost 3,000 with tip and two nights stay and guild. link to hunt and pictures below.
