I retired in June and to fulfill my bucket list, booked a cow elk hunt with a ranch in Sonora tx, my friend booked a W/T buck hunt for his son. It is 4200 acres of rough Texas Hill Country with only an exterior game fence. They have whitetails, elk and a variety of other exotics. They have a bunch of good black buck and fallow. He has 30-40 elk with some 300+ bulls. We started hunting Wed. 26th afternoon. It was cold, blustery and with a full moon, not the best of hunting conditions. We dropped my friend and his son off in a nice raised blind and drove around scouting for the elk. After being jarred around for 2&1/2 hours we got several glimpses of elk but no shots or stalks. Right before dark Jason’s father called to say Ryan had shot a buck. We were close so we went to see it and help. As we approached we saw several elk in the area of the stand. We didn’t get a shot. The next morning after a great breakfast we got off to a little late start. We bounced around again for several hours with no luck, so we decided to return to the stand where we saw the elk the night before and hunt it. As we approached we saw elk that were feeding, but moved away as we approached. We climbed into the blind and waited. The elk were in the cedars, but very skittish. After awhile they began to ease out into the open. I focused on what I thought was the largest one and waited for what seemed like a long time, but was probably only 15min or so. Let me say that the elk were not ‘crazy wild’, and due to the drought, were accustomed to the supplemental feed that was put around certain stands. At this time it appeared they were unsure enough and were about to leave. I finally got a decent quartering away shot and took it. The cow turned and trotted off. There was no apparent reaction to the shot and no chance at another shot due to the trees. I told my buddy ‘I can’t believe I missed,’ he was a little worried too. About that time she got the wobbles and fell over. I was elated. The shot was under 300yds, probably closer to 100yds hehe. The 30-06, 165gn Nosler Partition @2825fps broke two ribs entering, sliced the liver, lung one rib and the fleshy part of the off shoulder exiting. Elgin, Jason’s father, a man with 60yrs of taxidermy and hunting experiences said that it weighed close to 500lbs. I have no idea. Capt david I have pictures, but no idea how to post. "It's not how hard you hit 'em, it's where you hit 'em." The 30-06 will, with the right bullet, successfully take any game animal in North America up to 300yds. Get closer!

Cow elk meat is some of the best. You are going to have a lot of great eating! Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

Why is it necessary for folk - like Mr Topgun 30-06 - to jump in and post derogatory comments on another fellows hunt? The hunter reported on his hunt , which he paid for as a meat hunt , and was happy hunting that way. Why piss on his parade ? If you dont have anything usefull to add to the discussion maybe not posting anything would be a more suitable response. ________________________ Old enough to know better

One takes hunting advantages where one can. I'm hunting game on six rugged square miles. Most were born on the land. Some like my elk have have been there for years. capt david "It's not how hard you hit 'em, it's where you hit 'em." Muzza, it is not necessary, but it is what happens, and it is why hunters will never be able to stand united as a group and provide any real or meaningful opposition against the anti-hunting forces and unfortunately that is just the way things are. As with everything else that touches our life, hunting has evolved and for hunting to survive in the 21st. century it will continue to evolve and hunters are going to have to evolve with it. Sadly, I simply do not see the latter happening. As with every other undertaking, fishing/stamp collecting/wine tasting/gun ownership/archery hunting, etc. etc. etc. add infinitum, there are elitists that believe, often quite verbally and harshly, that their individual manner or belief in something is the ONLY TRUE AND CORRECT one and that people that do not believe exactly as they do have no right or business calling themselves a hunter or whatever the folks call themselves in whatever venue it is, nor should they refer to what they are doing in the same terms as the purists/elitists do. It would be better for everyone, that when a person sees a post someone has made about something they have done and are happy with/proud of, and they don't agree with it, just move on to something else. Why alienate others simply because they do/did something another person wouldn't, especially if it is a perfectly legal and accepted activity. Even the rocks don't last forever.

Sure a bunch of thin skinned people when I make one little comment and then congratulated him on his hunt if it made him happy. Then I see another similar comment to mine and yet I'm put on the burner! Now you guys make a big deal out of it like I shunned him from the hunting fraternity or something and get a bunch of stuff started that wasn't necessary!!! It's especially perturbing to read a long comment from CHC like he wrote when he argues with more people on this site than anyone else about how he hunts compared to others, antler restrictions if people don't agree with him, the reason prices on leases are going up, etc. Think about that a little bit would you CHC!!! If the OP would care to send his pictures to me in an email I'll try to post them for him: stephensonm@chartermi.net

Dude - it was obvious from your choice of words that you didnt approve of the OP's hunt. If that was the case then why didnt you just read it and move along. What made it necessary in your mind to post anything at all ? ________________________ Old enough to know better

Topgun, I have never claimed to be the voice of reason on anything, I was just stating my opinion. Last time I checked, that is one of the things such sites as this are for. I have never asked anyone to agree with me, never will. Also, the last time I checked, you are not the only person that will rain on another persons parade. It seems to be a universal condition on forums. Also, I believe if you will take the time to actually read what I said, I never referred to you by name, because you are not the first person to do something like this on this site, and you won't be the last. I merely responded to Muzza's observation with one of my own. Would you be so upset if I had agreed with your original response on this subject? Somehow I seriously doubt it. You sir, are dishonest. Everyone who read your comment knows your thoughts and you try to play it off because you congratualated him at the end. Speak your mind and have the guts to stand by it honestly. Great story on the hunt. Cow meat is fantastic! Perry

***Perry---Calling me dishonest is BS when you don't know me from a can of paint! Why has nobody, including yourself, commented on the above post which basically is damn near identical to mine? one of us Posted 14 January 2013 06:54 Hide Post Dude - it was obvious from your choice of words that you didnt approve of the OP's hunt. One thing is for sure, there are a lot of people on this site that must bite themselves on the ass when they get up in the morning.......... just to start the day off right. captdavid, nothing better than a freezer full of elk or moose meat. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

CHC, In my younger days I was more of a scrapper than in my old age. I’ve come to realize that I’m not the center of the universe and that others may have different perceptions of reality than I. A wise man, in a book I read from time to time sez, “A soft answer turneth away wrath” Perhaps you’ll allow me to make an illustration............ A few years ago I owned a rental property near Spring Texas near Rayford Road and IH-45. I would sometimes leave there and run up to our farm in Security Texas, say 25 miles away. I’d head north of IH-45 to the 336 Loop that connects with SH-105 between Conroe and Cleveland. One Friday afternoon about 4 PM, I did such a thing. I was in my F-350 and pulling a 16 foot lowboy with a 4 wheeler. Anyway I was not paying attention and cut this guy off in a van. Well, I didn’t mean to do it and really didn’t pay much attention to the 1 finger salutes he was giving me. Well I mosey about 5 miles up to the junction of the Loop and SH-105. There is a convenience store that I had a habit of stopping in to pick up some peanuts, crackers and some adult beverage that tastes good on a hot August afternoon. I stop and get ready to get out. All of a sudden I notice I’m blocked front and back by two vans. Both have the same business logo and a half dozen guys are marching up to my truck. I roll the window down and inquire how I can help. Well it’s the guy I cut off and he’s telling me he’s gonna whip my ass. I let him spew a minute, then say to him. Boy it sure is hot out here. What do you thing the temperature is right now? He is somewhat taken aback as this is not what he’s expecting. He looks perplexed and I say. I bet its well over 100, and that I’m sweating like a politician telling the truth. I then proceed to tell him there is no doubt that he and his buds can mop up the parking lot with me (he didn’t know that I was holding a 40 cal glock 35 with one in the tube backed up with 15 of its friends in the clip). I then said, tell ya what, since it is so hot and we both agree you can whip me, what if I just by ya’ll a case of your favorite beer. Well it was hot, it was quitting time on Friday and these were plumbers, so we all quickly came to the conclusion that me buying the beer was the proper course of action. Well they moved the vans and pulled up to the parking lot. I tell em’ I’ll be right in, wait till they all get inside and boogie. LOL. As best is possible, here and yon, I try not to make enemies, as they do tend to accumulate. One other bromide that has served me well. Remember what Yogi Bear sez....... Ya gotta be smarter than the average bear. Best GWB
