I know some of you are still getting ready to go out after deer but here in coastal California our rifle season starts the second Saturday of August and ends 44 days later usually about the third Sunday of September. We can get 2 tags in the area if you don't draw in another deer zone in the state.
I got 2 tags this year and took an average buck (forky) on the first day. Since then I have been sort of trophy hunting hoping to get one of the three pointers that I saw before the season. I've passed several opportunities to take forks during the season but now we are in the last week.
Well, as they say, the girls all get a little prettier at closing time and since Saturday started the last week of the season, my standards began to drop.
There is one particular oak tree on my place that is different than the hundreds of other oaks. I think it is a white oak but whatever it is, when the acorns ripen, usually at the end of deer season the deer just go nuts for the acorns. Saturday evening I took a ride and sure enough there was a nice forky snacking on the acorns. He never finished his meal.
Guess I'll just have to wait for next season to do more hunting unless the Mrs decides she wants more pork chops! Wink

Way to go Blacktailer. I have an A tag and B. Still picking grapes like mad and may not get to close out A zone next weekend. The only hunting I've done over the past 2 weeks has been with my eyes on the way to work.

Got a buddy with great ground in Covelo area and hope to get some action up there in Oct!

Well done! I'm looking forward to my first trip this fall, a Colorado bear tag. Season has been open since Sept. 2nd, but work has gotten in the way. Next week, not so much!!

Good for you Blacktailer

Always a good feeling to tag out and fill the freezer

Our Fall archery season starts tomorrow but for the first time in decades I won't be pitchin sticks this fall

I do however have 3 rifle hunts and 18 days away from work planned for November and December

If you are happy and satisfied with the outcome, that is all that matters, Congratulations on your success.

Hey BT,

Congrats on another successful season. Those with the black tails do not need giant racks to be great trophies. BTW, go right ahead and thin the hog herd. The missus would LOVE more pork chops.

Cheers

Good job Russ.

I'd be curious to find out what species that tree is. It could be a valley oak (Quercus lobata), they are in the white oak group and have larger acorns than the other oak species in this area. Or maybe it's a black oak (Quercus kelloggii). Despite the conflict of the common name, they are also in the white oak group and while they don't occur in many places around here you could very well have some on your ranch.

Congratulations on filling your tags. I have one more deer hunt to guide on closing weekend.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Mike pics or it didn't happen. I kind of embarrassed because these are only forkys and since both were shot late in the evening I didn't get any pics of the animals. Took the buck down to the processor this morning and will post a pic of the racks tomorrow. Stay tuned.
Shot them both with a BACO M70 FWT in 270.

Just average size bucks for this area but they will eat good I am sure.
