I was out with the hounds again today. Picked up a nice track about 730am put the dogs down and had a good chase for about 1.5 hrs. Our shooter was 20 yoa and this was his first bear he made a good neck front shoulder shot with his 270. Bear had a dressed weight of 251 lbs a nice fat one. All in all a good time.

Is it typical to hunt bear there with dogs ?

You can hunt with dogs or over bait. Every year alternates with either dog hunters or bait hunters getting the first week to themselves.

I have shot bears over dogs over bait and spot and stalk. Spot and stalk I found the to be the most interisting. But here in northern wis. it is impossiable. So it is bait or hounds I found hounds to be a lot more fun the bait but They all are fun.

Hey pds, Congratulations to the youngster. How far did you all have to drag it? Was the 251# before or "after" the drag? I always enjoy hearing the dogs running too, whether it is Bears, Hogs, Deer, Coons or Rabbits.

Hot core in was about a 250 yard drag then we were able to get the 4 wheeler to it. 251 lbs during the drag 251 lbs after drag 251 lbs when weighed at the game check station. The only thing that drags worse or the same as a bear is hog.

Great to see a youngster getting in on real hunting adventures. A neat trick I have used for moving bear out of dense cover and or over lots of ddowned timber is to carry along a 4x8 tarp. rolled up tight or in the daypack or when folded they don't add much weight at all. After the kill, roll the bear up and tie off the ends and maybe the middle as well. With a shoulder line or your rifle sling the bear looks like a big cigar and drags clean over the trail. HA, I hear you. Darn shame they don't come with "handles". We use a Drag Stick a lot and I always have one somewhere close by when I hunt. Looks like Frank has a right good idea too.

I've never drug a bear more than 5 ft. They're skinned where they die. Chuck

P dog, congrats on the bruin for your 20 year old hunter! I know what a bear (pun intended) the drag out can be. I shot a deer a couple of weeks ago and the numbers were something like this--estimate on the hoof--165 lbs --during the drag out (all alone and at night) estimate 450 kilos --when getting into bed of truck --3 metric tons actual weight at processor--159 lbs. getting it there--priceless..... Good hunting--Don

I used to skin them too but then i discovered how much I really enjoy eating roasts and steaks and not just sausage after boning them on site. I missed a beautiful bear last year that would have rolled right down to a logging road. Then ended up killing one that had to be dragged nearly three miles. Such is hunting. Frank

Yea if I were by my self and didn't have any help skinning on the spot would work. Had plenty of help and could get the 4 wheeler in close no need to skin on the spot.
