I'm throwing this out there to see what people are shooting for hunting loads in a .300 win mag.

Bullet? weight? velocity?...and what you've shot with it and how it worked?

-Everybody has a dream hunt, mine just happens to be for a Moose.-

-The 30-06 is like a perfect steak next to a campfire, a .300 Win Mag is the same but with mushrooms and a baked potato-

I have a Tikka 300 Win Mag. I use the Barnes X 165 gr. at 2850 fps, for a lot of different game. I have them zeroed at 200 yards. I have taken deer and Caribou with it. My Caribou was at 300 yards, one shot kill. Big Grin

Hello Redhawk1: I was out of pocket for while late last fall...how did your caribou hunt go up in the Brooks Range? If I remember right, you were going to hunt up near Howard Pass, or there abouts...please revisit the story for me if you would...any photos? If we need to move over to the Alaska Forum, we can do that...but I bet everyone would enjoy a re-telling of your hunt.

I use 79 Grains of R22 with a 165 grain Hornady SST or Interbond at 3250 fps. I get 1/2 inch groups with the SST and 1" groups with the Interbond. The Interbond worked well on my last elk. Shot at 35 yards through the neck, complete pentration and a large exit hole. I prefer the SST for deer sized game. I've shot two deer with it with good results; both at less than 100 yards.

My favorite .300 Winny load is 180 grain North Fork or Nosler Partition with 76-78 grains of Rl-22 depending on the lot number, with a Fed 210M primer. I can count on 3100 fps. wave Good shoting.

I have two loads for my Ruger 77RS with a 24" barrel.

Win. Brass
Win. WLRM
71gr. IMR-4350
180gr. Hornady SP
3075 fps.

Win. Brass
Win. WLRM
76gr. RL22
180Gr. Speer Grand Slam
3050 fps

Both loads shoot into less than 1" @100yds. I had a Hornady come apart on a cow elk a few years ago so I came up with load two. I have yet to use the GS on game yet, but I'm sure it will do the job.

I use 200gr Nosler partitions, Fed 215 magnum primer, RL 22 powder (IIRC about 1 grain under the nosler published max- seemed to get the best groups out of my rifle.)

I like either the 180 gr. Sierra Pro-hunter or 180 gr. Nosler partition with 74.0 gr. of WMR. My other pet load for the .300 Win. is 69.0 gr. of WMR with the 200 gr. Speer Hot-core.
The 180s do 3050 FPS and the 200 gr. bullet does 2950 FPS from a Winchester M70 with 26" barrel. Brass is winchester, primer is the WLR.
I'm going to have to try the 200 gr. Nosler Partition one of these days. If it is as accurate as the Speer, I'll switch to it.
My only bitch is Winchester dropped that powder.

Best load for 300 WM is unequivocally 82.3 grs. of Re25 behind 180 gr. Nosler BT or Accubond. This load is listed by Aliant Powder Co.

My favorite load in the 300 Win mag is 79 grains of H1000 and the 200 grain Speer Hotcor Spitzer. I just could not get the 200 grain Nosler partition to shoot into less than 2 1/2 inches no matter what powder or load tried. After 100 dollars worth of bullets I quit trying. No real problem as the Speer has done all that could be asked for and is very accurate.

My favorite load for the .300 Win. Mag. -- and I've fired thousands of rounds of this stuff in practice -- is the 180 gr. Nosler Partition Protected Point in Winchester cases with Federal 215M primers and Reloader 22 for just under 3100 fps. I've used 180 gr. Winchester Fail-Safe and 180 gr. Trophy Bonded bullets quite a bit as well. I always zero for 250 yds., which puts the bullet about 2.5" high at 100 yds.

I disike powders that are slower than Reloader 22 for the .300 Winchester, because you have to burn more powder to achieve about the same velocity, resulting in shorter barrel life and increased recoil with no better accuracy, at least not in my rifles. In a nutshell, I think you'll find that H4831, IMR 4831, and Reloader 22 will provide the finest accuracy with the most consistent velocity in most rifles.

I've not kept exact count of the animals I've taken with the .300 Win. Mag., but it's well over 100 so far. Included are Texas whitetails, Coues deer, mule deer, desert mule deer, elk, moose, sheep, pronghorn, hogs, bears, javelina, and scores of African plainsgame animals ranging from Damaraland dik dik to Patterson's eland. I'd also used the cartridge on a brace of cape buffalo, plus African lion and leopard.

I'll be taking my favorite .300 Winchester to Tanzania this year, as well as Idaho, Texas, and here in Oregon. Same 180 gr. Nosler Partition load for whatever I'll hunt with it.......

For Whitetails I like 69 gr of IMR 4831 behind a 150 gr Hornady Interlock.

In my .300 win I always had good luck with the below loads, they are about max though.

200 grain sierra boattail

75 grains of Reloader 22

CCI#250 primers @ almost 2900 fps
this load will actually shoot flatter than a 180 grain flat base bullet shot at 3000 fps
and hit harder at longer distances.

and this was my favorite all around.

180 grain Win Silvertips

76.5 grains of Reloader 22

CCI#250 primer

this load shot at @ 3000-3050 fps it kicked less than the one above and was more accurate
also.

Gene, You hit a sore spot!! This rifle is only 9 months old and I have shot 500 rounds through it It shoots the 100gr Vmax great but I had a hell of a time getting it to shoot hunting loads to the level I expected. This load is the best so far and will most likely be it, but I have considered barrels and I definatly will do something with the terrible Ruger triger..thanks I guess!!1
