I got my moose draw this fall, a Sept. 10th-24th hunt in central British Columbia. I'm going to be using my Ruger No1-H Tropical rifle, chambered in 416 Remington Magnum. I'm looking to develop a 250 yard moose load this summer. Currently, I'm shooting 350 gr. Speer Mag-Tips @ 2600 fps. These are my bullet options: 300 gr. Barnes X 325 gr. Barnes X 350 gr. Barnes X 400 gr. Barnes X or XLC 350 gr. Speer Mag-Tip 400 gr. Hornady Interlock RN 350 gr. Swift A-Frame 400 gr. Swift A-Frame 400 gr. Nolser Partition 340 gr. Woodleigh Weldcore 410 gr. Woodleigh Weldcore RN The moose will probably weigh 700-1200 lbs. Any suggestions?

Pick any of the ones you have listed shoot them see what one shoots the best out of your rifle. Load it them go shoot and kill a moose. They well all work just fine.

As a fellow .416 Remington Magnum shooter, let me know if you have any leftovers that didn't work out for you. I might relieve you of them if the price is right. Anything you listed will work. I love the Speer Mag Tips; I'm pushing them at 2700 FPS with 93.0 grains of BL-C(2). Three of them (I like to shoot) did a nice job on my last black bear. A friend mentioned the neat "auto-gutting" feature of the bullets. Russ

i am using hornady 400s at 2400, using the MINIMUM load in hornady book for win 760. I am going to be trying rl 15, in my '16 and in my steyr 376. jeffe

Todbartell I also shoot a .416 Rem and do like those Swift a frame soft point 350 gr bullets and Barnes blue 400 grain X. I have never shoot the gun at 250 yards before to check out the bullet drop, but have shot 4inch circles at 200 yards and it was right on the money at zero.

I shoot the Northfork bullets as they are the most accurate and perform with boreing excellance on game....however, I think you will have more trouble finding a load that won't work on moose than you will finding one that will, as far as killing power goes..... Your terribly overgunned for moose and trying to make a long range rifle out of 416 is a real compromise, I would much prefer a 338 Win. but hunting is fun and games so have a good hunt...Just MHO.

What ever happened to the .308 Win, .30-06, and .300 Win Mag moose rifles? Have moose evolved somewhat and started to sport canines and claws? (.416 Rem on moose, sounds excessive to me ?????) CDW [ 07-09-2002, 23:01: Message edited by: Woodrow ]

quote:It the only cartridge I have that is suitable for moose, unless you count my 7mm Rem Mag. If I had a 338 or a 35 Whelen, I'd use that, but I don't. The 308, 30-06, and the 300 Win. Mag are all great cartridges, but are less than IDEAL for bigger game like moose. I'm also pretty sure you'd get a lot more meat damage shooting a 300/180 gr. @ 3000 fps than I will expereince shooting a .416" bullet at anywhere from 2400-2700 fps. I don't really consider 250 yards a "long shot", hell, even a 400 gr. bullet has a point blank range of 240 yards. A moose is a big enough target I think. Overgunned for moose, maybe, but all I'm trying to do is kill it as quickly and humanely as possible. I always read on this board that you should use enough gun and bullet to shoot through your game lengthwise, and I feel my 7mm Mag is not up to the job. I think I'll do a little shooting with some 350 gr. Speers, 400 gr. Hornady RN, and 400 gr. Partitions, that's all I got right now.

Tod I don't consider 308, 3006 or 300 mag less than ideal. But that 416 will for sure kill the hell out of them. I load mine with 87gr Varget for 2700fps with a Barnes 350 X. Peter

TodBartell: I'd be using the 7MM Mag for sure if I had one. That'll do the job for your moose. Just a friendly bet as well although it'll be impossible to prove.....I'll bet you that there has been more moose killed with a combination of the .308, .30-06, and .300 Win Mag than all other cartridges combined. Peter: As far as meat damage on the .416, how bad would it be in a shoulder hit, (1.5 feet square on both sides???hehe) and what do you figure would be the best load to minimze meat damage?

I think the 416 is a good choice. At the moment I have only a 308 Win or a 416 Rem to choose from, and I'd use the 416! I used 330 grain GS Custom HVs at 2650 fps recently in Africa, and had great results. No meat damage to speak of, and through-and-through on all shots except the eland - which hit the heaviest bones in the spine dead center and was under the thick hide on the far side. All of the bullets mentioned would work, but I'd go for one in the 350 grain range. Don

Woodrow I've never actually shot a moose anywhere that it had meat. Under most conditions a 150gr to 180gr, 308calibre bullet through the ribs kills them just fine. Not much meat to ruin there. When I started hunting all I had was a 30-30, I found it a good idea then to hit them in the neck or head as they seemed to cover a lot of ground if you poked them in the lungs. I would guess that a 350gr X started @ 2700fps hitting the shouder of a moose at 50yds would probably leave somm pretty heavy duty bruising. I know it bruises my shoulder a bit and I'm on the safe end. Peter
