For those of you that don't know me, I am usually pretty active on the African forums. I live in southeast Georgia. This past Sunday I set up a ladder stand in a hardwood bottom on some property my family owns. I went back to the stand about 2:30. I decided to take my new Remington 673, 350 Remington Magnum. I hadn't taken anything with it and was hoping that today was going to be the day. It started drizzling, and I saw some wild hogs moving about. I looked to my left down a run that leads to some oaks, then looked back to my right and the buck walked out about forty yards away. He stepped out from behind an oak tree and I shot him through the shoulder. He dropped like a rock, and never even kicked. The bullet did an excellent job, and didn't ruin very much meat. I was impressed, and was thrilled with the first kill with my new toy.

Here's the buck and rifle.

I took the rifle out again this morning to collect a wild hog to make sausage out of. I had been in the woods about one hour when several small hogs came through an oak hammock, then this guy trotted in.

He stopped to feed under an oak tree on the edge of a salt marsh about 70 yards away. I waited on him to stick his head out from behind some brush, and put the bullet about three inches below his right ear. He never knew what hit him. I am having a good week with this new toy of mine. I think I like it.

Congrats! I have an original Model 600 in .308 thats ugly but effective! That short carbine is just the ticket at times. It looks like you've found that out already though! Nate

Nice buck Dale. What bullet did you use and how was the performance?

I picked up a 700 Mountain KS in 350RM and would like to blood mine on a whitetail too. beer

I used the plain 'ol factory 200 gr CoreLokt. Been using them for years and have no complaints. The bullet broke the left shoulder and exited just in front of the right. The exit hole was about the size of a quarter. Lungs and heart were jelly, and the meat loss was mimimal. I chose to shoot through the shoulder because of the rain. If I had shot behind the shoulder and he had run, I may have had trouble with the blood trail being washed away. The deer never knew what hit him. I am going to try the rifle this week on wild hogs. I have no doubt it will do the same to them.

Let me clarify something. When I stated in my earlier response that I had been using CoreLokts for years, I meant that I had been using them in various calibers. This is my first 350 Remington. I have used the CoreLokt Bullets in 308, 30-06, 270, 243, 30-30, and others and still consider it to be a good bullet. As far as the 350 Remington goes I fell in love with it with one shot. It performed wonderfully on this deer, and I have no doubt that it will take much larger game if needed. I will post a hog update this weekend if anyone is interested. Didn't mean to be misleading.

Jorge,

The last couple of times you have come to Georgia, I missed out on your company. If you come next week and you and JudgeG don't stop by, I will track both of you down with my bloodhounds, handcuff you both to a tree, and make you watch me drink a bottle of single malt and not share a drop with you . Be forewarned!!!!!!

Hey 1115, Congratulations on a fine Deer and a great Cartridge. Only problem I've ever had with the 350RemMag is the noise. Absolutely have to wear some form of hearing protection with mine.

If you decide to Reload for it, the 200gr Hornady is an excellent Bullet. Totally agree with you about the need to keep them going through the shoulders.

You will find out it is "Pure Pig Poison".

Congratulations again and continued 1-shot kills to you.

Yes it does. I thought about making a replacement to make the rib flat to the end of the barrel and doing the same for the rear sight, but haven't gotten around to it. That will be an after hunting season, cold weather with nothing to do project. Or, I may leave it as is. Time will tell.

Congratulations!

Don't you just love the .35 cal. for moderate
range deer and black bear hunting? I shoot a Ruger 77 (old tang safety) "Carbine" style with an 18 1/2" barrel in .358 Winchester. I re-stocked the rifle a few years ago to accommate my dominant eye vision loss, causing me to shoot "crossover" style. I looked at your shot placement, and damage shown in your posted photo. It's nearly identical to the deer I shot Sunday. My 358 has never failed to create a "big hole".

Good luck on your "cold" weather project.

Nice going on the buck and hog. Smiler Is that a gloss Leup 1.5-5x20 on your rifle? IMHO, it looks perfect on that rig. I strongly considered a 673 in .350, but ended up w/ a ss/composite Ruger in the same caliber. Haven't tried it yet, but it should easily handle smallish southern whitetails.

Yes it is a Leupold 1.5-5x20. I got it with a post and crosshair from Premiere Reticles two years ago. I originally mounted it on my CZ 375 for African Hunting, but the front optics went bad and I put another scope on the CZ. Leupold fixed the problem, and when I got the 673, the scope seemed to be a perfect mate for that rifle. I love the combination so far.

Sure is an UGLY rifle....I love it! There's one at my local gunshop, but just don't have the $$$ right now. I like the .350 Mag, too.
Congrats on the deer and hog.
