Houston Safari Club (February 16, 2017) LEGISLATIVE ALERT The U.S. House of Representatives has approved H.J. Res. 69, by a vote of 225 to 193, affirming the rights of states to manage their fish and wildlife resources, including hunting. Even though the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) mounted opposition to H.J. Res. 69, the House recognized the importance of approving this resolution and the recognition of state rights. The action was anchored by your support and the support of Hunter-Conservationist groups and individuals across the United States. Thank you for your actions! Background: Last year, the USFWS issued a final rule bypassing state authority, deemed the, "Non-Subsistence Take of Wildlife, and Public Participation and Closure Procedures, on National Wildlife Refuges in Alaska" (81 Fed. Reg. 52248 (April 5, 2016)). This rule prohibits and restricts legal forms of hunting on National Wildlife Refuges in Alaska This rule was not supported by the hunting community or most residents of Alaska. *** Alaska Business Monthly Young’s Efforts to Overturn Unlawful U.S. Fish and Wildlife Rule Moves Forward Joint Resolution of Disapproval Expected to Pass House on Thursday Office of Congressman Don Young (Published: February 15, 2017) Washington, D.C. – Alaska Congressman Don Young (R) is working double-time this week to overturn a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) final rule that would seize authority away from the State of Alaska to manage fish and wildlife on federal wildlife refuges in Alaska – a clear violation of federal law. Young’s resolution of disapproval, H.J. Res. 69 – under consideration in the U.S. House Representatives this week – would nullify an August 5, 2016 FWS rule (81 Fed. Reg 52247) through the use of the Congressional Review Act, a powerful tool being deployed by Congress to overturn politically motivated rules finalized in the waning days and months of the Obama administration. Alaska Congressman Don Young testified yesterday before the House Rules Committee on behalf of H.J. Res. 69, calling it an important step to enforcing the law and restoring Alaska’s federally protected ability to manage fish and game. *** DSC Life Member HSC Life Member NRA Life Member SCI RMEF | ||
