Man uses 40 cal. handgun to shoot bear in his home.

https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4085955/posts

A bear entered a home in Steamboat at 2 a.m. Saturday. Kelly Mauldin heard her dogs barking and got up to investigate and discovered the 300-400 male bear in her house. She screamed for her husband, Ken, who got up and shot and killed the bear. When I went to my bedroom door, I saw the bear about 10 feet away and shot it instantly with a 40-caliber, semi-automatic handgun. Then the bear charged me. I continued shooting at it as fast as I could. The bullet hole in the floor suggested the bear got about five to six feet...

If people would stop feeding them this wouldn't happen.

Ann, I think you are correct, but only part of the time. Humans should not feed bears and get them to thinking humans are a good food source. The other situation is what we are going through now. The West is in a very severe drought. Where I live in east-central Utah, 17 of the last 20 years have had below average moisture. (Our average moisture is only 9" per year.) A lot of natural foods, such as acorns on the oak brush, are not available. The bears come into town looking for fruit trees and anything else they can find to eat. I don't know what we can do about that. This is like most other wildlife issues - it is due to more than one cause and is not simple to deal with.

I feel your drought, we have it here too. Very bad plus horrible extended heat. Wild grapes have dropped all the fruits, as have wild plums. Several of my fruit trees have died. Seeing huge oaks die. Looks like there will be no acorns this year either. Late spring freezes had already affected a lot of mast.

No hay crops. Pastures all dried up. Deer coming into the barnyard seeking food. They have never done this before.

Just like all kinds of other wildlife, people have become tolerant and actually encouraged them to hang out around their homes. Then they're surprised when they have problems.

These three definitely look friendly. Pretty sure I could convince them to share a beer.

I see 2 things here.

1 -You got ever expanding population encroaching deeper and deeper into Bear territory and frankly crowding them into townships, because it is prime real estate.

2 -You got the "Animals are people too" crowd brainwashing everybody and their dog into thinking they are NOT wild, unpredictable and incredibly dangerous animals AND making it a virtual Sin for anyone to protect themselves.

Frankly I dont see the situation getting any better any time soon.
