An old friend I haven't seen for awhile called me today to chat. And as with every time I've communicated with her over the years she couldn't help but remind me of the time I "wronged" her. Back in high school I'd asked her to go to the homecoming dance, which she said she'd like to but had to ask her dad. The days dragged by and I had no response, and I realized that quail season opened that same Saturday. The choice was obvious, and I decided on a weekend long bird hunt with my best buddy and our dogs. She then calls to say she could go and I said, "Well we're going quail hunting instead". She was kinda upset about that and her dad calls me to talk about this. As it turned out, she sat home that Saturday night while me, my buddy and her Dad had a great hunt all weekend long. I have skipped funerals, weddings (one where I'd been asked to be best man but it was opening day of deer season) to go hunting instead. I was not home for Thanksgiving, Xmas or New Years for over 20 years because I was trapping. And I'm certain that I'm not alone in this.

It's a lot about the way you grew up. My dad and I always hunted on holidays and it was and still is accepted on my side of the family. And duck was generally the meat of choice for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. We just didn't like to sit around visiting all day with kin folks. It is a different story with the in-laws however. Can't remember the last time I missed a Thanksgiving morning on a deer stand. My kids are with me as I was with my dad. As long as family is included I value traditions like that. What I find sad is when I hear of people who put their own interests ahead of their family. That goes for work or play. I can remember more than a few fall mornings watching my son's rocket football games or my daughter's basketball games thinking what a good day it would be to be in the field but I have no regrets. The biggest buck in the world isn't worth the time I have to spend with them. Life is about what I can share, not what I can get. Jeff In the land of the blind, the man with one eye is king.

Well said Jeff. I have a system: I pretend to work and they pretend to pay me!
