Looks like Wisconsin will have there first elk hunt this fall. Those Wisconsin Elk were totally established with sportsmen's dollars. I don't agree that Indian tribes should be given any tags for subsistence hunts of trophy animals. But in this liberal society... NRA Endowment Life Member | |||

March 14, 2018 RMEF Supports Inaugural Wisconsin Elk Hunt MISSOULA, Mont.—The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation congratulates the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on its decision to institute Wisconsin’s first-ever managed elk hunt later this year. “This is the culmination of more than two decades of elk-related conservation work,” said Blake Henning, RMEF chief conservation officer. “RMEF has been involved with reintroduction efforts in Wisconsin dating back to 1995 and continues to put funds on the ground to benefit the state’s elk herds and elk habitat.” The DNR will provide ten bull-only tags for the fall of 2018 within the Clam Lake elk range in north-central Wisconsin. The state’s southern elk range in Jackson County will not be a part of the hunt. One of the tags will go to a resident via a RMEF raffle designed to generate revenue for elk habitat management, research and monitoring. It is expected to be available for purchase in May. “This hunt is not only a tribute to the DNR and many other partners but also to our statewide membership including our RMEF volunteers who have worked so hard for so long to raise funds to enhance Wisconsin elk country,” added Henning. RMEF has two dozen chapters and more than 9,700 members in Wisconsin. Since 1990, RMEF and its partners completed 455 conservation and hunting heritage outreach projects in Wisconsin with a combined value of more than $8.6 million. Of that total, more than $1.6 million went specifically toward elk reintroduction and other conservation work. I'm a member of RMEF and appreciate all they do. However, IMHO offering 5 of the 10 tags to Native Americans is overkill and pure BS! Maybe 2 or 3 of the 10, but half of them and 1 to a high roller in an auction only leaves 4 tags for the blue collar workers! | |||

Other than what has been posted here and the RMEF press release, I know nothing about the efforts to establish an elk herd in WI. That also means I have no knowledge at all of the contributions any tribe had in those efforts, if any. Because of that I have no opinion if 1/2 the tags are too many or not. You should re read the article, nowhere does it say "one tag to a high roller" 4 go to the drawing process, 5 to Indians and one to a "RAFFLE" where even a working stiff has a shot at it. | |||

I fore see the tribal members traveling up and down the roads in the Clam lake area at night with their spot lights, shooting their elk that way. Just like they do with deer. | |||

28 states have Indian casinos. Wisconsin being one of the 28. Perhaps a big portion of the casino revenue is donated to wildlife management in Wisconsin, thus they get half the tags. Then again maybe not. Their donation was tongue in cheek, really I'd say fat chance. To the victor goes the spoils. Which war did the Indians win to give them the right to have casinos where non Indians can't? | |||

In Wisconsin after they buy a new Escalade with their casino money the rest goes for booze and drugs. | |||
