I am using 405 grain copper plated lead ballistic tipped bullet for elk. but it only goes about 1300-1350 feet per second. muzzle loader, and I think that will be fine. Elk are big, but elk are not tough to kill. any bullet with weight over 130 grains, and caliber above 6.5mm can do fine on elk, although most feel that a bit larger is better.. AN dthere are some that say they do just fine a bit smaller. With elk, size does matter. I believe that any bullet carrying over 1000 foot pounds of energy to the animal should do just fine, IF IT IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE!!! I have never seen anything over 375 used for elk, but then again, I am only 53 and have only seen a few hundred elk hunters close enough to know the size of their bullets. Keep it fun. No, I have not shot an elk with a .510 570 grain Woodleigh. I did hunt antelope with them, but did not get close enough. | |||

In case anyone was interested. The following pictures illustrate the performance of the 570gr Woodleigh SP driven at a muzzle velocity of ~ 2330 fps. The shot was ~ 150 yards. Exit wound: With the hide removed (again this is the exit wound): The bullet exited and was therefore not recovered. The entrance wound showed almost as much trauma as the exit. The lungs had an approximate 2" diameter hole punched through them. The cow poured bloode from the entrance wound, to the extent it is clearly visible 150 yards away with the naked eye. She "ran" approximately 20 feet before doing a 180 degree nose dive. I am happy with the performance, and really can't imagine the need for anything "better". I apologize for not getting any shots of the internals, my photographer (who will remain nameless) did not shoot them with the still camera but decided it would be "cooler" to shoot it as video. The pictures of the internal trauma to the thorastic cavity is FAR more revealing. For whatever it is worth, there it is. The cow on the floor was a head shot. Not pretty, to put it mildly.
