I watched this guy bed down about 200 yards from a treestand I was sitting in on Friday morning. I was able to stalk to 22 yards and put a good shot on him. My first mule deer with a bow. I green scored him at 158 6/8 net P & Y. Trophies are not dead animals...they are living memories.

Wow! Great stalk and good shooting. He's a beauty; congratulations! Where did you hit him at? It sort of looks like a heart shot in that first photo. How far did you have to track him? Thanks for sharing the story and photos.

I hit him through the heart, but he still went straight down hill about 100 yards...into the deepest rivine he could find! I had to get assistance to get him out for pictures! Trophies are not dead animals...they are living memories.

Holy Crap!!!! what a great trophy Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Man Congrates. I lived in ND (Beulah)78-81 and never saw a mullie like that one. Hell of a deer man! Where did you find him. I always ended up hunting the badlands for Mule deer. Tough country but nice deer. Great folks out that way to. Was always impressed with the land owners is ND. Shot this one east of the Badlands quite a bit-actually we are about 50 miles west of the Missouri river. I love ND-and I wouldn't give up our family farm for anything! I never take it for granted. Thanks to everyone for the great comments-I have been bow hunting this area for 18 years and this is the first opportunity I have had at a truly great buck! To say I am elated...would be an understatement.

That's an outstanding buck, nomrcy. I've had the pleasure of hunting your back yard several times and have always enjoyed it. My 15 yr. old Brittany has been up there several times and the young one made the trip at 6 mo. There's so much to see and do. But let's keep that our little secret. We'd like the whole story about your buck. How'd you manage to get into range? How far was the shot? Did you know he was there? Stalking, ground blind, tree stand? For those of us that can't get up there this year, show a little mercy and share some details.

Dagga Boy- It was really just dumb luck of being in the right place at the right time. I was in a treestand that I normally hunt whitetails, rattling and grunting all morning. At about 9:30 this guy comes strolling by at about 200 yards and beds down on a west slope with a NW wind in his face and the sun at his back. I was able to get out of the treestand and take my boots off without him seeing me. I was able to sneak around the hill and sneak to the ridge right above him. I nocked an arrow, drew back and peeked over the top and he was standing there looking at me at 22 yards. I put the 20 yard pin on him and released. He ran straight to the bottom of the rivine and died there. I couldn't move him by myself, so my uncle came and helped me get him out of the rivine. I took a bunch of pictures with the timer after he left and went back to town to skin, cape, and quarter him out. I stopped at my favorite field on the way back to town though....and in a half hour did this... And shot my limit of grouse and pheasants the next day too-it was a GREAT weekend! Big congrats, nomrcy! That's some awesome hunting!! To get down, close the distance and catch him in his bed at that range?! You sure can be proud of yourself. And to top it off he's big and beautiful. That would have been a great trophy if it was a forky, let alone a big old mossyhorn. You are going to score it for P&Y, right? And to cap it with the birds is over the top. Not that we're envious down here, but all I saw this weekend were cars and people. If you tell me you also did some predator calling and killed some good fur, you and I are going to have a problem. Keep us posted, keep up the good work, and most importantly, have fun.

Thanks Dagga-no fur that weekend, but after the snow flies we will hit it hard! ALOT of coyotes this year and sightings of a few bobcats-which are rare in our area. I will be getting my buck scored for P & Y. Since I am an official measurer and can't do it myself- I will have one of my fellow ND mearurers do it right after X-mas. Thanks again!
