JoelM, you've gotten some good advice here. If you likie the 300 Weatherby, go that route, if you reload than ammo is not an issue, cost/availability. If you don't, shooting enough to get proficient at long range will cost you with weatherby ammo prices. If I were to pick for you I would just say: What DJ said. He knows his stuff, and the rig he outlined is right on! I will add that the laser is a must IMO. Good Luck --Don

I should probably get used to high fences because that is the future of huning. I just read an article that there was a buck that sold in Texas for +400k. The article went on to say that the new owner had already sold enough sperm to make his money back. That is also what made me decide that hunting on high fenced property was not hunting. I didnt know they raised and released deer like cattle. But when you can make the kind of coin they do who can blame them, it is a lot better money than cattle. But hell I like debate almost as much as I love hunting and high fences and slob hunters are two of my favorite topics. I can see a few exceptions to my rules, disabled hunters and kids. A few cull deer from a tree stand might help my girlfriends son overcome buck fever. And they also offer disabled hunters a much better/easier chance to hunt. Glad to see I havent pissed anyone off

I would start with a 300 WBY or RUM. However, I would be just as worried about the optics. I would recommend something in a upper power with a mil-dot or TDS reticle. Also make sure you have a good range-finder. There are people who I trust more with a 500 yard shot, than the average hunter with a 100 yard shot. But they all spend mega hours at the range. One buddy shoots his rifle with his big game loads at rockchucks, and he won't take a shot less than 400 yards (too easy for him). Good Luck

300 RUM, 200gr Accubonds, Swarovski with TDS reticle. Start zero'ed at 200yds, then move to 300 etc.. Shoot a lot of High Power and Silhouette to learn to read wind, then practice with the RUM (or Weatherby).........DJ
