I am going on an Antelope hunt, and am using my Rem.700 in .308 Win. I was planning to use Sierra 150 gr. BTSP. I now have heard about a 140 grainer from Lost River that sounds really good. Has anyone had any experience with the slugs, and can you recommend a top end accurate load for it. I would really like to exceed 3000fps from a 22" bbl.(if possible)
Thanks all

Tweesdad,

Hunted Antelope last year in New Mexico and, if you haven't done it before, I suggest shooting practice at long ranges before worrying about more exotic or flat shooting ammo. Turbo Goats aren't too tough to kill as long as you throw a decent piece of lead anywhere near the vitals. I used my Rem 40xc in .308 with Federal 168 grain match ammo (not great hunting ammo) and from a prone position at 350 yards, the bullet went right where I wanted and penetrated from the animals chest to just under the skin of the hindquarter. Proper shot placement sure makes up for bad bullet construction
Flat shooting is a valuable assett in a pronghorn rifle, but unnecessary if you can take the time to practice at longer ranges.
If I had it to do again, I might consider Barnes' new 168 grain match x-bullett or their 130 grain boat tail x-bullett. Or,if you really want flat shooting, try their 110 grainer!

Enjoy your trip!

John.
Really appreciate the response. I shoot high power rifle competition, and needless to say I get a good deal of practice at longer ranges. (600 yds) I am certain that I can take any "goat" within any reasonable range using my standard target load. This however is not what I want. I am still looking for a load using the L.R. J36 bullet. If this works, I would seriously consider changing my match load to their J40. The BC of these slugs is almost beyond belief. If they will cut the wind like I think they should, they will be worth the hellacious expense.

Tweesdad,

Sounds like I should be the one asking you for advice, and not the one offering it.
I am, personally, a big fan of "off the rack" ammunition if it works well so my reloading knowledge is fairly limited.
Hopefully you have a great hunt!

Keep your powder dry!

Yes, the 125!! Knew the gamewarden in San Miguel County (Las Vegas, N.M.) years ago. He used a .308 M99 Savage with 125 or 130 grain bullets for everything from porcupines to elk, and had no problems at all!!

Tweesdad, just call Warren at Lost River. He'll be happy to suggest a load. FWIW, Dutch.

Your 150 grain Sierra load would be hard to beat, but if I were to use something else, I think I'd also go with the 125 grain Ballistic Tip.

with a 6 inch kill zone that load is point blank to 315 yards. not bad for the little 08.

I have seen some pictures of Los River bullets recovered from testing media, and thought they were solid match bullets, for their high penetration and lack of expansion.
Are they hunting bullets?
Maybe they destroy tissue by toppling over...
I don't know but even their advertisements show no expansion.
Has anyone used them on game?
Montero.

I would agree with Eric. This is the same load I use for deer.
