It was in Northern Maine along a hi-line where one can see for a very long ways.

The moose decided to run across and I led him and squeezed off and it fell in it's tracks as it was about to enter the thick woods on the far side.

Not to worry as I have practiced this shot all summer and was prepared.

I use the HMR as I just don't believe in ruining meat more than necessary.

I know since you were shooting a magnum the hold over wasn't an issue but how much did you have to lead him?

I'll bite, I'm sure someone here can come up with a impact velocity and impact energy at that distance. I don't spend enough time in my recliner to work the #No's myself. vapodog, please feel free to jump in here. This is a perfect scenario for you to analyze.

For some, the object is just to see if it can be done, the 17 HMR might be a bit on the light side, but it worked for you so congratulations and mighty fine shooting. Talk of foot pounds and energy and all that stuff isn't from the field anyway . . . you are out there doing it Waidmannsheil, Dom.

And I agree with you about the meat being ruined by the "big magnum toters". It just shows how meaningless energy is at the POI if you're more skilled than all the knuckle-dragging naysayers around here that just shoot once a year.

I have a buddy who made a similar shot with the HMR on an American Bison with the same "bang-flop" results!

All the people who doubt the killing ability of this "small and tight" cartridge are dopes!

I think I'll give the HMR a run this weekend; Rhino season just opened.....stay tuned

I REALLY hope you were using the 20gr protected points, the 17gr plastic tips just don't have the penetration needed for moose. Fine for white tails to 900 yards though!

and yes, I also congratulate you....even if you did hotload that thing.

It's a real treat to see folks that can hit so well at great distances. Anyone can do it with a centerfire.

Well, you're right. I did soup it up a bit.

Perfect cartridge/bullet combo, the tissue damage is so minimal, he looks as if he were sleeping. Such a peaceful picture, I down loaded it as a screen saver, thank you.

There was no exit. The entire tonnage of energy was absorbed by the moose resulting in "fell in its tracks" performance. This is exactly why a .17 HMR is the perfect moose cartridge.

You were lucky then, I think the last guy who did that at 400 yds had the bullet exit and killed another moose behind it.

Nice shot and nice moose. Get it mounted and post it somewhere you have bragging rights. Not everyone can shoot like that.

I have to use the .22RFM for my Elk it is only good to 400 yds.May be I need one of them new fangled .17 HMR's so I can shoot out to 500+ yards.

Really sorry to keep bothering you....

...but I'm concerned at your choice of caliber for such a big animal at that extreme range. Why didn't you choose something adequate such as the .223 with 40 grain Nosler BT's or, if I dawn my "magnum toting hat", might I suggest the 6.5 Grendel next time. It would display your respect for the game.

I'm sure you think that the energy they deliver at the POI is overkill and I can relate.

Next year, I'm going with the standard .17 HMR. No more souping it up.

Put too much powder behind that bullet and it acts like a 16" gun from the USS Missouri.

May I suggest a longer barrel. The muzzle flash is a bit severe it seems.

Be careful when you load for the HMR!

It's finnicky and you can get high pressures without warning!

I've seen the shock wave from careless loading act like a daisy cutter on the foliage!

Actually this seems a lot more like a 16 HMS than a 17 HMR......but then it's not a Grendel!

My point about using the heavier calibers like the Grendel and the .223 is that one shot kills them and tenderizes them at the same time. Energy!

You might try one of them thar .17 BB Red Ryders in the latest offering....the .17 RR Grendel. I hear it's deadly to almost 500 yards on mulies but then you know how folks blow things out of proportion on the internet. There's just so much malarkey flying around; folks making wild claims and moderators supporting them.

Well, it's the opening day of pheasant season and I need to get some meat for the freezer.....I still have a few .22 rimfire birdshot to shoot at them. It reduces meat damage ya know!

I think proves that the ideal deer cartridge for most hunters is the .17 Mach 2, most of us can't shoot accuraly at the longer ranges. At typical ranges say <300 yards the reduced recoil and muzzle blast will promote accurate shot placement.
