Looking for advice on a do it yourself mule deer hunt in WY. Looking at Regions D, E and R as possibilities. Could you offer advice for any of these and particulars about public access and camping areas? Many Thanks

Region D

Then contact:

Scott, Dan
13910 State Highway 487
Casper, WY 82604
307-473-5749

I think tresspass fee is roughly $50.

WVBlue: I hunted what is area 66, region D, for antelope in fall '04. Beautiful open country with plenty of public land which, unfortunately, is scattered amongst many areas of private land. Get a hold of the BLM maps for that area, which shows in good detail the areas of public and private land:

http://plicmapcenter.org/

You can also order them directly from the BLM at better prices, I believe.

In addition, check out the Muddy Mountain Hunter Management Area, which will give you some access to private lands owned by cooperating landowners - this is where I ended up hunting:

That being said, If I ever make it back there (I hope!), I would probably try to gain access to private land via the trespass fee route, as Doc suggested. I understand that if you contact the local chamber of commerces, they often have lists of cooperating landowners available.

Although I was looking for antelope, I did run into some mulies, primarily in the bottom lands in the heavier sagebrush which border the waterways. It was very dry the year I was there - most of the waterways were dry and the country side looked bleak in many areas. However, I did come across several mulie sheds in one area that they apparently winter on. I did see three bucks during my hunt, but none were bigger than modest 3 X 3s.

I can't help you with camping areas, as I stayed in a motel in Casper! Big Grin

If you have never been out west hunting before, you are in for a thrill - it was a great experience for me after hunting the eastern woodlands for whitetails for some 30 years.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the Great Outdoors.
