I've been told that the airlines industry is beginning to enforce their oversize baggage regulation. If you research most, if not all U.S. airlines, you will see that they define oversize baggage as any bag greater than 62 combined inches (L+W+D). Does anyone know if this applies to gun cases? I do know that some passengers recently had the dimensions of their suitcases check at the checkin counter. The additional charge is quoted as $100 to $150 per item.

I've checked my gun case numerous times without a charge but I am now wondering if the airlines are pulling out all of the stops to be profitable. I'm traveling to Montana for a fall combo hunt this year and I would like to ask if any AR members had the size of their gun case recently checked by the airlines.

Thanks for any comments.

Flew to BC in late April on American. They did not check. Mine is only about 4" over the limit.

Used to be that certain types of luggage was exempt. ie golf clubs and gun boxes. Best you do a search on whatever airline you're traveling on or give them a call.
I've never been charged but I've only traveled with single gun boxes, not some of the big things I see advertized.

I recently returned from Africa and I was using a Tuffpak gun case. I was not questioned regarding size dimensions. However, that was two weeks ago and maybe the airlines have lost their collective minds recently and changed the rules. Yet, when I got to St.Louis they offloaded my TuffPak to the Oversize luggage carousel which was not running and had not been opened for public use so it took an extra hour to find my luggage. Nothing serious, just a pain to deal with.
