No wonder saddle scabbards never caught on over there. I'd have to say that is kind of a scrub looking horse, for an Arab! Must have been the only one in the bunch that would tolerate his rider waving around that long barrel.

Looks like a group of mahdist fighters in or around Khartoum, Sudan around 1884-85.
They were led by a militant Sufi Islamist, Muhammad Ahmad, known by his followers as the mahdi. Rough translation: the one chosen by God to restore Islamic justice to the world.
The mahdi overthrew Egyptian rule in the Sudan and was himself deposed by the British at the end of the century.
