Just a reminder to all California Residents that June 2 is the dead line for applying for X zone deer, antelope, elk, and big horn sheep.

I electronically sent in my preferences, not sure why as I am sure all of communications goes directly to the trash folder...... coffee

Good luck in the draw. If I ever get drawn for Tule elk I'll buy a lotto ticket.

Ditto!

Kind of like buying lottery tickets for money that they have already promised to someone else.

Dont know how.......but this was a good year!

My daughter drew a Grizzly Island Cow tag and I drew a Grizzly Island Cow tag!

After years of putting in for anything, after years of all my family, friends, coworkers and neighbors putting in and never drawing anything!, we drew two tags! Even thou they are tuley cow tags, its like winning the lottery and it finally happened!

Keep trying guys!

She drew the first season Jr hunt and I drew the reg last season hunt. She also got put on the list for an alternate on the Suprise Valley antelope hunt but she's #2 and there's only 4 tags so I'm not planning on that happening.

Why is it so difficult to hunt in California. Is it the lack of tags, or the number of hunters.

It's both; few tags, ever fewer for non-residents and lots of local hunters and private land.

The number of deer in Northern California has been on a downward spiral for 15 years. The Mountain lion is protected and the the Black Bear population is increasing as hunting with dogs has been outlawed. The increase in bears means fewer surviving fawns.

I talked with the DFW at a local fair, when I asked what if anything the they were doing to increase the heards they said nothing, but we have a ton of turkeys and pigs........

One would think that such a large state with such beautiful wild country in the northern portion of the state would be doing everything it could to maximize hunting opportunities for not only its own residents, but also to bring in revenue from the vast number of non-residents that might like to hunt in northern California.

The bottom line is that California has too many people. 35 million is a whole bunch, even for such a huge state(#11 in population density)....

Add to that: lack of predator control, limited "quality" public land, anti-hunting private landowners, towns scattered throughout the state....

Not the best place for a hunter.

But there are some great opportunities available.(Cow elk with Nolan Twizzelman comes to mind)

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I don't think the State cares. Remember the head of California Fish and Games was fired because he partook in a legal mountain lion hunt out of state. The commission felt he did not support the "spirit" of California's ban of lion hunting. About this same time the name was changed from "Fish and Game" to Fish and Wildlife.

Yes, the pigs. We have pigs, but no place to shoot at them, even with bows and arrows.

Some guy at the shooting range told me to apply for the G3 hunt. I don't know if that's a buck or doe hunt. I drew it, but now I find out it's in December. That sounds way too cold so I probably won't go... Wink
