I just closed on 40 acres in East Texas about 30 days ago. The property has 3 deer stands and an unfinished cabin on it. Looks like it will be good for deer, hog and predators.

I'm in the process of finishing out the cabin. I spent the weekend installing insulation and the walls. I still have a long way to go but will post more pics as I finish everything out. This is my first time as a land owner & I'm thrilled to finally have a place of my own.

Congrats on your place.

I built a cabin several years ago about the caliber of yours on our place in Central Texas. It cost me a lot less than a travel trailer and is much roomier and more comfortable. Talk about cozy on a damp, chilly night! Simply wonderful. Enjoy!

Not to tell you how to run your business, but...
I'd put a ridge vent on the roof and soffet (sic?) vents under the eves.

Hey Bawana, Congratulations! Looks like somebody snuck onto your place and put some feeders out to draw the Hogs off their place.

Even has a Skinning Rack behind the picnic meat processing table. And a nice Leather "Stand" Chair next to a shooting window. tu2

Forgot to mention that. It came with 5 feeders and a large metal shipping container for storage. The property has a small pond on it as well. I see ducks on it all the time.

The property is about 80% hardwood (more oak than pine) and 20% grass fields. Some parts have a lot of underbrush but many areas you can easily walk through. It's a long strip that sits between 2 400 acre cattle ranches. Looks like a natural game trail.

When I picked up the keys from the seller he said the last time he was down there, he and his son saw a huge hog on the property as they were leaving. He said 400 lbs but we all know how they shrink when you shoot them. He said he saw a really nice 10 point down there last season but his son missed him.

The hogs are tearing up that back field. The feeders have not bee running for months so they are tearing up the ground looking for food. It may be easier to feed them until I can get a chance to hunt them. They are turning my field in to a motocross track with their rooting.

Very nice, sir, may you enjoy it to the fullest! I have a small building similar to that one, they are built by the Amish community around here, they can be fitted out quite nicely and comfortably. Good luck with it, MMM.

Congrats! Looks like a great property. I did much the same thing last September. My best advice is to find out if it sits on a slab, foundation or just a footing. Then treat it for termites. Do it before they can get to it. I learned it the hard way when I finally got a look under my floor.

Then go shoot some hogs!

Hey Bawana, Right between two Cattle Farms, Man-O-Man. Sure sounds great and having a pond is just amazing. 20% open-land sounds like some potential Food Plots.

What kinda rifle do you have that will Kill a 400# Hog? I'm just asking because I feel sure Vapo will be concerned about that Hog Herd once he sees this thread. (Here is your chance! Big Grin) Is the "large metal shipping container" big enough to hold all the Ammo you will need???

It is really great to see some good news for a change. Good Hunting and clean 1-shot Kills. tu2 BOOM

Thanks for the advice on the ridge vent and termite protection. I didn't think of that and will add them to my list.

Hor Cor,

If there really is a 400lb hog running around out there, I've got my 9.3x62 with a 285 mega or 270 hot cor. Big hogs and the 9.3 go together like peas and carrots Wink

Big Grin Hey Bawana, You fooled me. Big Grin I'd have thought something shooting a 0.338" Bullet might do the job. Maybe made by Fed. tu2

But, yes indeed a 270gr or 285gr Bullet should get their attention, real well.

Best of luck to you. (Good fences makes good neighbors.)

Scott

Do you have electricity to the cabin?
Even if you do I would still recommend you get a quality wood stove.

here at my place I use the wood stove for @85% or more for my heat.

It cuts my electricity bill around half.

If you do have electricity then I would also recommend one of the DeLonghi raidiator electric heaters.
They are very safe and work real good.
I used one at the deer lease this year and it was down to 12 degrees a few nights.

I liked it so well I bought one for my "man cave" as it is the fartherest room away form the wood stove and I shut the door so one TV does not interfear with the other...

Congratulations Scott,

I am sure you are excited about having a place of your own to hunt on. I know it is my dream for someday. I spent 10 years in TX (before moving to NY), and love the hunting there.

I installed the flooring today in the cabin. I pulled some pics from the trail cam I installed 2 weeks ago. The time code is correct but the dates are off. I guess I forgot to reset the date. These were taken the last two weeks. I had about 60 pictures, here are some highlights.

Scott--looks great. Have you fully wired it? In the pics looked like possibly minimal wiring. Much easier to do before you seal the walls. A great big +1 on the ridge vent and soffit vents. If you do that--you have to seal off the other vents. Looks like you do have a gable vent in front. Reason being is that the ridge vent will draw from the soffit vents and you get the whole roof vented. If you leave the gable vent open, it will draw from there and vent the upper portion of your roof only. I put ridge vent on my house and my next door neighbor has gable vents and roof vents--but my attic is 30 degrees cooler than his--I measured em.
