While my wife was hunting last weekend a wild pig walked by her at about 20 yards. She was setting on the ground with her back to some trees. She was using her Rem Mod 7 loaded with Winchester factory 168 gr Ballistic Silvertips. As it was near dark she shot the pig in the left shoulder. As soon as she shot, the pig hit the ground. She bolted in another round, but later told me the pig did not even kick. It was a boar that weighed @ 225 to 235 lbs. There was no exit hole. While skinning the pig I noticed a 3 inch gash on the rear ham. I thought this might be a result of him fighting with another pig. As I continued skinning the damage looked like a bullet wound. Sure enough I find a perfectly expanded .223 diameter jacketed bullet. It weighs 34.3 grains. It caused a 3 inch gash and then only penetrating another 3 inches. So much for shooting a running away pig with a 223 cal rifle. The 308 had penetrated the shoulder, traveled through the vitals, penetrated the rear of the off side shoulder, and was caught by the rather substantial gristle plate. The bullet weighed 122 grains and had expanded to .49"X.63". We lost about 2.5 to 3 lbs of meat from the on side shoulder and less than .5 lb from the off shoulder. A small price to pay for a drop to the shot, no night time tracking job. | ||
