My son is busting on me to plan a moose hunt with him for 2009 or 2010 an looking at the price some outfitts are asking, $6000- $10000 EACH, has me thinkning we may as well head to Africa on a PG hunt and SAVE some money.
Does anyone know of a decent guided Canada or Alaskan hunt for under $4000 each. I'm not adverse to doing a float type hunt where we do alot of the work ourselves but mostly everyone that does that type of hunt claims to not seeing or getting a moose.
Open to any and all suggestions, PM me if you prefer. Doc

GO TO AFRICA! A $4000 moose hunt would be a cow hunt at todays prices, and you may not even see a mooose!

A trip to Africa is unforgetable!

Try the NW peninsula in Newfoundland. I went with Eric Patey in October. He has 11 or so camps on lakes. This year he was charging $4500 US. He uses a Beaver to fly hunters in and out. They are very efficient - if you can walk and shoot you will get a moose. Antlers are smaller than Alaska/Yukon moose, but the meat tastes just as good.

The camps are not fancy, but are more than adequate. The guides will quarter, bone out, and pack the meat back to the lake.

It is not easy hunting, but I found it enjoyable and very productive. It is a 5-day hunt, but most hunters tag out by day 3. I brought back one box of meat on the plane, and the rest was shipped back by freezer truck.

Google Patey Moose to find him.

Liberals believe that criminals are just like them and guns cause crimes. Conservatives believe criminals are different and that it is the criminals that cause crimes. Maybe both are right and the solution is to keep guns away from liberals.

I have a client that does newfoundland moose every year and he always asks me to go. He says it's $3500. 10 guys go and they usually kill 10 moose, not monsters by any means. Last year he killed a 48 incher which is great for newfie. Mostly small bulls like 6 points and cows. Usually one of the group kills a 30 inch or better every year. I can't remember the outfit, I'll find out when he gets back from mexico.

I've been to Africa a few times for PG and buffalo, I've also been moose hunting in BC near Ft. St John where I killed a 54" bull.
What I'm looking for is a fairly priced moose hunt to take my son on with a high percentage of sucess, as it will be 1 and only moose hunt in the foreseeable future until he finished med school.
Thanks for all replies, Doc.

I'm not an expert, but I would think a quality guided moose hunt will be above your price range anywhere in north america. Key word there was quality. If you want to DIY go to the Alaska Hunting forum search previous treads on this subject and ask away. I know a guy in the Palmer area that goes with a group of friends every year and they always get some great moose. I think his was 67" that he shot 2 or 3 years ago. Do your home work and speak to people that know. The Alaska department of fish and game is supposed to be very helpful. You might speak to Mark Young who posts frequently on the African and Alaskan hunting forums. He books hunts and could help you on prices for different areas. He also lived in Alaska and could give you advice about DIY moose hunts.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

www.red-pine-lodge.com. They have special group hunts. If you are not interested in antlers, they have an unguided group hunt for a cow and 5 yearling calves for $3300 total. If you want to do the same hunt with a bull, it will run you $4300 for the group. Bull archery hunt is $2500 each.

These are some of the best prices going. I've never hunted with them, and don't know anything about them. I stumbled on thier website awhile back and bookmarked it.

My son and I hunted spring bear with these folks in Alberta in 1998. They've gotten somewhat more pricey on their moose since then at $5,700 2x1. They hunt some pretty nice country, mostly accessing it on Argos. That may or may not appeal to you.

As for me, I would definately do another trip to Namibia for plains game for about the same money.
