160g Partition or Grand Slam, whichever one your rifle shoots the best. I used a copious amount of 4350 and a mag primer @ 2900+ fps. Should get pass thrus at any reasonably angle. I never shot an elk in the ass so I don't know about that.

The load I have been using the has worked well in all rifles it was tried in was 62.5gr. R22, Fed 215, Rem cases, and either a 160 Nolser Partition or Northfork. Bullets were set to magazine length in the rifle used, which was still a little off the lands.

Work up to this as all guns are different. Has shot and inch or better with both bullets, but I definetly think the Northfork is a superior product!

Have used the 139 gr Hornady Interbond at 3530av.fp this last Dec. It Did it's job very nice in a 7 Stw on a elk. If it will hold up at that speed, youre 7mag with that 139gr or a 154gr Interbond will be more than sufficient.

I have taken several elk with the 140gr partition. It penetrates well and I have not seen a need to use heavier bullets.

NOT a 7mm RM, but close......I've used 150 NP's almost exclusively in both my std .280 Rem and its AI forty degree shoulder brother. I've never found that bullet at 3000 or so to be wanting. Though ALL of my elk shooting is at farther ranges, no timber ranges. So at least at 200+ it has worked just fine.

It all boils down to placement. Stick a 140/150 NP through the lungs and you are quickly dealing with a dead elk.

I've always used a Hornady 154 gr spire point and 4350. That is the combination my rifle has always liked. Never had to shoot an elk much further than 250 yards. I am careful of bullet placement so I've not had any problems with the construction or performance of this bullet.

When I shot a 7mm Remington Mag, and its been a few years, I shot nothing but 175 gr Nosler Partitions over a lot of old 4831. Now a days, I have been shooting a 7mm Weatherby occasionally, in that I have pretty much shoot a 160 gr Fail Safe over RL-22. For the most part I been hunting with a 338, but those 7mm fail safes have had me do some real thinking about what is and is not really needed for the game I been hunting of late. I just may dust off that old 7mm Remington just because.

Guys, I like the 140gr partion bullet real well I have used it on almost all the deer I have taken ,(65.5 gr. 4350)and it shoots into a clover leave at 100 yrds but I was worried it might not be heavy enough for an Elk. Seems like some think it is ! Thanks

I like the 7mags for elk size game. I have taken a couple of elk w/ the 160grNP & see no reason to change as I have had complete penetration including a shot between the shoulders, spine & out the front. RL22 & IMR7828 have worked great in both the 7rem. & 7mm Dakota mags. It's always good bullets & good placement.

I have a couple boxes of 160XLC's that I think would be great for an elk load. Flatter traj and deeper penatration than most other 160's.

I've yet to work on a load for the 7mag with them but might be using them for griz this spring. I have found an accurate load for the 280 with these. My ol' man's moose load for this fall.

I'm useing 160gr speer bowtails,H-4831,cci-250 primers, and win. cases. I've had good results up close and out to 350 yards on elk and deer. recoil seems to be milder with this load than some of the others I've tried. The 7mm rem mag has been one of my favorite cartridges for deer and elk.
good luck and have fun with watever load you choose.

Gentlemen,

I use the 175 gr. Nosler Partition over 66 gr. of IMR 7828 with a CCI 250 primer for an average of about 2960 fps, and it always works for me. I've used it on everything from jackal through a few eland, and I feel it is an excellent combination of penetration, energy, and trajectory

175 Nosler partitions at 2900 fps over RL22 would be my choice for larger game. i can't see a reason to use a 140 grain bullet when the caliber will handle the 160-175 Noslers with good velocity. If I were to use my 7mm Mag for deer also and didn't want to change loads I'd probably go the 160 grain, the 7Mag is made for the 160-175 grain bullets in my opinion.

My 7 has a 1"in 9.5" twist it seems to shoot the smaller bullets very accurate ,at high speed. But I think I will try 160 noslers next weekend.
