My dad and a couple buddies drove up to Colorado from Oklahoma on Friday to do a little mule deer hunting.

On Sunday evening I found a very respectable buck and his little buddy hanging around about 15 does. You could tell the bucks were starting to think about the rut as they would come together and push around a bit. I watched the bucks for about 30 mins when I decided the largest of the two was big enough to take. However, it would require a stalk that would take me well after dark to complete and I had the keys to the pickup, which dad and Wilson were hunting with me, so I decided to come back the following morning and look him over again.

The next morning Snellstrom and I went back in to find the deer again. Overnight, they had picked up a smaller 3 point. We looked over the buck again and made the decision to locate dad and Wilson and see if we couldn't get them on the bucks.

We made it back into the area and found the two smaller bucks. Made our stalk above the bucks but couldn't locate the big guy. Snellstrom had snuck around the big boulder we were positioned by. The two little guys were just below us about 125 yards pushing each other around again, when I decided to make another scan. I crept up over the boulder in front of me and there was the big guy bedded, watching the little guys in their spat.

Snellstrom got Wilson into position and he made a 250 yard shot on the bedded buck. While Wilson was putting the finishing touches on his buck, I got dad in place to make the shot on the middle sized buck. I'll never forget the smile on dad's face after he made the one shot kill, dropping the buck in his tracks at roughly 250 yards.

Though I still have a couple days left this weekend to try and fill my tag, I could really care less if I do!

Lots of smiles around camp that day!
