My wife and I are going to DSC in early Jan - anyone have a recommendation for a add-on (after show) TX whitetail hunt? I realize we'd have to travel out of the DFW area. Not looking for ultra-high end but nice lodging and good hunting. Lots of outfitters on the web but hard to evaluate them, looking for any thoughts on this. Many thanks.

you can get lots better info from others than my one experience...but i hunted adobe lodge in san angelo back in '99. it'll be around 4 hours from dallas. it was a nice place, but you hunt over feeders, so just be aware. very friendly guides and good food, we had a great time.

The Texas Hunting Forum is a good place to look for a hunt.

Neil, I am a lifetime Texan, and it pains me to say this, but true "hunting" in TX has become almost extinct. As has already been said, most hunting is over feeders, and any decent animal is going to be pretty pricey, as this so-called "hunting" has turned into a very lucrative business.

I would not even know where to point you, but I sincerely hope if you go that you have a good time, and prices are reasonable. If you feel they are, then they most likely are. I hope that makes sense.

Best regards, I hope it all works out for you.

It all depends on what you are really looking for, price wise/game quality wise.

For a lot of the state, unless the ranch is under special management (MLD 2) with extended seasons, the general season will be over after January 1. In south Texas, the season will still be open, but hunts can be more expensive.

Not a whitetail, but I've always wanted to hunt nilgai on the king ranch.

With season winding down, there are possibilities such as Mr. Helm mentioned and depending on time constraints there are hunts available until Jan. 1 in 200+ countys in the North Zone and until Jan. 15 in 30 counties in the South zone. The majority of hunts on places during those time frames will simply be basically for what is considered a legal buck in the county hunted.

The hunts on the properties Mr. Helm referenced can or will be for Trophy bucks and accordingly will be higher.
