Looking for some online outfitters that hunt the large blackies in the East...is it N. Carolina that has all the heavyweights?

Seems like there was a post recently telling about all the bears over 500 lbs. this year. Where is that post at? I looked and couldn't find it. Thanks.

Biggest blackies I've personally seen were in Manitoba. Try an outfit called Bird Hill Outfitters. I don't know if they are on the net, but they used to advertise in the back of Hunting magazine. - Dan

Try Queen Charlotte Islands and northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Very high protein coastal diets combine with very short sleep period (if any) to grom 'em fat.

I have to second (or would it be third?) the comments by Mike D and BBB. Tough to beat the BC coast for big black bears. Lots of dandies come from northern Sask and Manitoba, but those fish fed blackies on the coast are bigger on average.

I have heard Jim Shockey's outfit does pretty well, and there are numerous others to choose from.

Yukon Delta,
The reason you hear of big bear in NC is b/c we have huge cornfields that border poncossins. (Poncossin is an Algoquin word for swamp on a hill.) This occurs primarily in Hyde and Tyrrel counties, but to a lesser extent in Beaufort County. If you really want, I can scan you the article about the 750lb one killed in Beaufort Co. this year. Remember, though, that you hunt bears here with dogs. You can't bait! (Unless you want to go to jail and become real poor.)

As soon as I figure out how to hunt a monster w/o dogs or bait, I'll have some pictures for you.

There was a guide that was highly recommended, but I can't recall the name. (In Tyrrel Co., though.) You might ask the editors of Carolina Adventure Magazine http://www.carolinaadventure.com/.

Wow! Those are pigs! With that kind of feed, they are probably pretty tasty too.

FWIW, I saw Shockey guiding another Realtree guy on TV this morning. The hunt was mainly just driving and glassing, similar to the way we hunt them out here in the mountians. He charges $4000 US for 2x1, but they did see a lot of bears.

I've heard of those 800#+ bears from NC, and would love to see any pictures of some big blackies. They are amazing!
