I was just looking over Alliants webpage.... can you really get 3000fps out of an 06 using 165gr bullets and a 24" barrel??

Mark,

I happen to have just spent an entire day at the range yesterday testing a variety of 30-06 ammunition in my Winchester Mod 70 which has a 24" factory barrel. I haven’t had the chance to workup handloads for it yet so I don’t have direct information corroborating the Alliant loads, but I can tell you that some of the factory stuff was impressive. I tested the 165 grain Hornady SST Light Magnum loads and got velocities between 2962 to 3040 fps measured 10' from muzzle over my Oehler chronograph average of 6 shots at 2992 fps. I was impressed enough decide to use that for deer this year. Shot 3 shots into 1.25†at 100yards. For reference the standard Remington 165 grain Core Lokts (green/yellow box) ran right at 2890 fps.

Hope that helps
Paul

The link you posted would not come up for me, however, I went to their webpage, to the 30.06 load data and the highest velocity I read was 2890 for the 165 partition. The speer bullet of same wt. was 2880.

Where were you looking?

I know Re22 works very well in my .06 with 180s and it seems like years ago I tried the 165 Btip with that powder and it was impressive in accuracy, precision, and speed.

I was just suprised that they listed a 165 at 3000fps and was wondering if anyone was actualy getting these velocities.

Paul, did you happen to test any 150s?

I use 180 grain bullets in my .30'06. With 60 grains of IMR 4831 I get 2900 FPS out of my Standard Pre'64 Model 70 (24 inch barel), and 2840 out of my Pre'64 Model 70 Featherwieght (22 inch barrel). Rem. cases, and CCI large rifle primers. I have taken alot of game with this load out of my Featherwieght. I've used either Sierra Pro Hunters, or Nosler Partitions.

It's pretty common to surpass 3000 w/ 150s even in a 22" tube so I can see 3000 being achieved w/ 165s from a 24" tube.

I've done it myself with 165g SST's but accuracy goes to crap with Reloader 22. My do all 06' load is 56.6g of IMR 4350 over a 165g SST. Out of a 24" Hart barrel on a 721 action I can put 5 rounds in a nickle at 100 off the bench. A critter doesn't know the 150 fps difference on a well placed shot. I opt for accuracy on this one.

A followup to your question on 150s. Yes, tested two: Remington Green/Yellow box 150 tested out at 2910 fps average, Hornady 150 gr SST Light Mags tested out at 3105 fps which was not faster than the 165s. Bear in mind that this was not a comprehensive test, just a "quick and dirty" check for a good deer load. I think I am lucky to have a "fast" barrel on this rifle. Still I would bet that with prudent powder choice you should be able to get 3000fps with 165s.

Good luck
Paul
