So the deal has been struck. She gets a 35k convertible and I get to buy a new gun and take a portion of the family, me, the wife, (maybe) and 2 boys 14 & 16, on an elk hunt. I think that’s a great deal!?!? We’re not out for a trophy, just the experience. I am the only one with previous elk experience they all have whitetail experience. I wanted to go on a cow hunt with a wilderness feel i.e. packing in, horses, tent, a lot of walking and spotting in big country. Problem is all the cow hunts I’ve found are “you stay in the local rat hole motel, go to some open field were they are herded up, kill one, and you’re on your own for meat care. Does a true hunting experience exist focusing on cows? Or are they all late season meat hunts were you’re on your own? Are there any western states with a good youth hunt? I don’t need to stick one. I just like being out there. Maybe Colorado regular season on the cheap and focus on just an ordinary rack bull would work? I am trying to keep the trip under 10k BTW. Unfortunately, I live in NC so I’ll be flying in. Time would be limited. I could drive out west but that’s going to be almost 2 days of driving each way. I have 3 drivers though. Thanks for any ideas or advise. K-man

Its pretty easy to find what you're looking for. Just pick a state and call some outfitters, the search engine is pretty easy to use. Most are going to charge you 200 bucks a day for all nonhunters on the trip. For a 35k midlife crisis vehicle,I'd be booking something in alaska or africa.

You can try this site for more info. elkhunting.com Sounds like a drop camp or tresspass hunt might be to your liking. Either way, the price seems to be about the same....maybe 1000-1500 per hunter.
