I'm planning a winter hunting and skking vacation in Taos for the end of the year.
They offered me an elk hunt for the last week of December in a private ranch.
Someone have hunted there in winter?

Well, its cold and a little snow. Msot of the elk will be in the lower elavations, possibly farm land or P$J. The bulls will be back together and herds will be pretty big. Sounds like fun, nothing like starting off a day of skiing with a dead elk!...........wapiti7

I have hunted elk in north-central and north east New Mexico for 35 years. During elk season EVERYONE with a pickup and a tent in that part of the state becomes an elk "outfitter." Do you know the name of the outfitter? There are some "outfits" around Taos that put hunters on very small properties, or sit you on a rock on public ground and hope the resident elk herd walks by. Ask a lot of questons befoe you commit.

There are some good outfits west and north around Chama, and over to the east around Cimarron. Again, ask some very direct questions before you put any money down.

Good luck on a elk/ski bunny combo!

I lived in Taos for a couple of years. I knew two fellahs that were decent outfitters. The one Trujillo was also a heavy equipment operator. He was a really good guy. I ended up going solo and taking a good bull high on Latir mountain, near Costilla, NM. If there is heavy snow, they will be thick and easy to find in the low lands. If it is dry, you better pack some hiking boots.
Don't stay in the ski village any longer than necessary. The mountain is great for skiing, but it is not much good for anything else except hanging out with people from texas. You should stay at either the El Monte

or if you are not made out of money, the Taos Inn

have fun.

Guys,
unfortunately Mr. Trujillo dont find for me an elk license for late december. If ther'are some other good outfitters in Taos I will be very grateful for your help.
390, thanks for the hotel's links. El Monte Sagrado looks the ideal place for "parking" my wife during the hunt
