I emailed this to a friend and his responce was: Re: What could be worse than hitting a deer? "Hitting a pig. Don't laugh unless you've lived in Iowa. Pigs are low to the ground and cause your car to flip."

I grew up in a small town and 2 high school kids were drinking and driving through a pasture and hit a large bull broadside with their ford truck. the bull rolled over the cab and squished the whole thing flat, killed both occupants. They found the bull dead about 500 yards from where the accident occured. Wish I had some pictures, that truck was a wreck and the bull walked away, at least temporarily.

I was the mechanic for a company that runs trucks into Wyoming and through Yellowsone nightly. And Im here to tell you that critters are also quite capable of making a mess of a Kenworth!! One guy found a black angus cow dead square center of the grill, it slipped through the fence and it was quite dark. I had to work on that one for several days.

Worked in Texas south of Houston a dozen years ago, and will say that hogs on all the country roads are definately to be feared at night. They generally do go under the car, and it is like running over a boulder. Flips the car down into the ditch, and at speed, it really causes injuries. One of my instructors hit an Angus cow in the dark with his Geo Metro @ 65 MPH; totalled the car and the cow walked away. It had to be put down later, but just its survival was incredible!

Same with bears, low to the ground, the chances of your car going airborne is way higher. - Dan

The person driving that car must be dead! A friend hit a moose on the interstate in Maine with his Ford Club Cab. The impact ripped up the left side of the pickup and the left door. There were no serious injuries to the occupants but the moose had to be shot there. This was quite a bad accident and they could have been killed.

I dunno, that moose may leave a dent but I think colliding with something in the megaton range like Rosie O'Porkchop would be a hell of a whallup. "Snot knockers" we call them in ice hockey. Or as 49ers safety Ronnie Lott calls them, "Whew hits". Hits that make you go "Whew!".

Cows, horses, pigs, bears, another vehicle. There are lots of things worse then hitting a deer. I have seen them all get hit. The ones with the longer legs are the most dangerous as they tend to go over the top through the windsheild or crushing the the top down. Not a good thing.

One of our MT Hwy Patrol Officers gave chase to a night speeder on a 2 lane highway a few years ago. At over a hundred he hit a mature cow moose with his Ford Crown Vic. The moose went through the car similar to the cow shown but she did not fare as well. Basically in three pieces with the majority of her pouring out of the back seat area. The cruisers do have a roll bar/partition between the frt and rear seat areas . So that helped to slice and dice her. The Officer did ok,he was VERY Lucky. I've investigated cattle and horses vs vehicles and they are THE worse. Tall enough to decapitate drivers as well as heavy enough to total out even a semi. Deer are no big deal at all, annoying at best. Even investigated a BISON vs Ford Mustang many years ago. The two CA Ladies in that little Mustang convertible were VERY lucky as well. Elk are just big enough to be dangerous though. Had a guy with a new Dodge 3/4 ton pickup, diesel, king cab,etc hit a mature 6x6 bull a few years ago.He was at over 80 mph when the bull ran in front of him in the dark. Struck him, tossed it over the pickup, tearing off the tailgate on it's way through the pickup bed. That one was VERY unusual. The bull was possibly jumping/in the air just enough to go over the hood. In my earlier post I meant a bull as in cattle, not a bull moose or elk, just for clarification

I was up glassing for a bowhunt in the California Sierras a few years back and met these two gentlemen one weekend. I had taken out a crippled coyote earleir that day, probably hit by a car, and the stories started to flow about Truck vs. whatever. The one guy mentioned an epic crash right about where we were sitting and glassing. His buddy just moaned and pleaded for him not to tell the story. Naturally I persisted. Seems the buddy was trucking on down the highway in the early morning darkness to get to his hiking spot when he spotted a huge buck cross the road in front of him. He kept his eyes on the buck to see which drainage it was headed for when there was a loud crash and he ended up in the ditch with his radiator smoking on his jeep. He had clipped a big cow and it was laying over on the other side of the road just bellering her head off. HE said he glanced over and there was the buck watching the whole thing unfold. About that time a CHP rolled up on the scene and he said it was total calamity. He went over to see if there was anything he could do for the cow or just put her out of here misery and he couldn't see anything wrong with her. THe CHP agreed the cow was okay and just had a sore head. Eventually the cow got up and trotted off and the guy limped up the powerline road to try and get ahead of the buck for a hike in and a shot. He ended up frying his motor and had to get towed in. "There I was", the guy moaned, "Biggest buck of my life and I had to hit a freakin cow". Kharma baby.
