This will be my first year elk hunting. I'm going to Anaconda, Montana. I'll probably spend a week up there as I have to fly there. If I could I would spend every day of the season hunting.

Jayco,

I hunt elk in southeast Idaho in units 66, 66A, 69 or 76, depending on whether I draw or do the general. We usually hunt for three or four days a year for elk. Most times that is enough on the "meat" hunts, but a little longer is desired if after the bulls.

2003 was my 23rd year hunting in Colorado, 2004 will be year 24, all of it nonresident, with my resident hunting buddies, two of which a sister and a niece had the smarts to marry. We've hunted a variety of places starting north of Craig, both sides of North Park in the Walden area, and recently, north of Rocky Mountain National Park. The best has been North Park. This year we're moving camp up on the East Slope of the Continental divide.

We hunt Colo just south of Steamboat. It depends on which season we hunt. If blackpowder, usually a week. If rifle, the first season is only 5 days. Of course if the idiots show up with their ATV's, it's all over anyway.

Jayco, I hunt different areas in Idaho, depending on the elk kill ratios annouced by the Id.F&G. (They have not yet posted those 2003 ratios.) Over the years, I've hunted as long as 15 days (east of the Pahsimeroi River Valley, 37A, Controlled Bull Elk drawing.)and as little as four days, when both my buddy and I killed an elk, each. (Unit 39)

I've also hunted in your general area, Red River Hot Springs, up off the Old Montana Road. Great country.

How are the elk faring up in your area this Spring??

There is still 3-feet of snow 5 miles out of town.Last year we got about 2 ft more than norm just out of town. The Elk are still hanging on the rivers(Salmon and Clearwater)and you can see them by the hundreds early in the morning where they winter.I just loaded my camper and am anxious to go towards Elk City and Red River. Were planning the whole trip over the Montana road this year and want atleast a week to do it so we can look it over good.

Jayco.

I live and hunt in SW Montana. I have been chasing elk for 31 years. I spend about 25 to 30+ days a year in the field hunting elk/deer or whatever. If you add up 25+ days per year times 31 years I have spent allot of time chasing the damn things. You would think I would have gotten it out of my system by now but that is not the case. I am as addicted now as I was 30+ years ago.

I try to make it back to my beloved home state of Colorado every year for elk season. I don't always make is since the navy sometimes has other plans for me. Last year I was off the coast of Iraq and Liberia during the summer and fall.

My family usually hunts the northwest part of the state during the late season. Always a cow hunt for us. We want the meat. I've shot some pretty good bulls over the years, but the meat off a yearling cow is pretty hard to beat. Elk horns are pretty to look at, but when you get down to it, all they do is stir the stew.

We usually can tag out all the hunters in a week, but then my family has been hunting the same areas for over 40 years. You might say we kind of have an advantage over most people.

Idaho backcountry. hunts last one day (if lucky), or a full week if more picky or less lucky.

Last two years, gone home empty, one year by choice, one year too choosy.

Next year will be a meat year.

All hunting is from backpacks, and dirt strips as base camp. spike camp is on the back.

MAC your family sounds like mine. They normally tag out the first weekend, some years by noon opening day, but they have been hunting the same area for their entire lives. I'm going to enjoy the country and look for a bull.

I have a group of buddies and relatives that hunt Northwest Colorado each year. We hunt the last season that is usually cold and snowy. We have been hunting the area since 1992 and do quite well. All seasoned hunters and shooters or they don't go. Good shooting.
