That is like comparing apples and oranges.

What do you want to kill?

What sort of terrain - woodland or wide open spaces?

Danny,

the 25-06 was designed for medium weight bullets at high speed, whereras the 6,5X55 was designed to push heavy for caliber bullets at a medium velocity.
So you have the same diameter, but two separate philosophies.
I would go for a 25-06 with a relatively short rate od twist, thus ensuring the stabilization of 150 grainers, while still being able to use lighter weigths since the high consistency of the actual bullet production permits a high rate of twist without losing a lot of accuracy. Besides, the bonded bullets also ensure bullet retension even at high impact velocities, so shooting a 120gr premium at 950m/s will give the same, if not better, penetration as the good ol' 160gr at 750m/s.

Why not a 6.5-06? The best of both worlds. Good powder capacity for those times when you want the velocity, and all those beautiful 6.5 bullets to choose from.

Hey Danny,
I guess it depends on the size of the Sanglier and the circumstances (no driven animal).
From a tree stand, no problemo, the 120gr Barnes would just work perfectly. Once the 53gr in 222 penetrated the scull of the Boar and it was found between the shoulders (frontal shot). The boar was no Razorback, but a 120 pounder. Excellent meat...
As for the 25-06, no doubt it would work very well on any boar, with a broadside lung shot.
As for the Partition, I wouldn't try, as the 7mm, 140gr from a 7.08 does not impress me at all. It killed everything we (two pals and me) shot, but rarely did it exit, and no blood trail. the 350 (or 9.3) is much better.

When do we try this 120 grainer ?

Hi Olivier
Is it still forbiden to use ex-miliatry calibers like 3006, 8x57,308 in france or the regulations have changed . i remember when i was there (25 years ago) these nice calibers were out of question for hunting and hunters used 9,3 or 338, 300 mag or shugunns with ( ball helice or brenneke) for boars.

The 25 06 is flatter but you will only notice this at longer ranges than I suspect you will be shooting at.

I would go for the 6.5x55. For the following reasons:

Ammo must be plentiful in Sweden

It is a proven hard hitting woodland cartridge.

Zero 4 cm high at 100m and it is flat out to 200m.

You can use heavier bullets than the 25 06.

I have one and I love it.

Dead on, Danny. Those excellent calibers are forbidden, at least no hunting allowed with them. Still, I own a 308 short, the very same 308 round but with lenght and shoulder downed of 1.2 mm: free use and same ballistics...
We have the same thing with the 30.06, by the way. But then few hunters reload, so people prefer the 9.3X74R in express rifles, or the 9.3X62 in mauser or better yet, Blaser rifles.
Since many favor semi autos, they choose the rem 7400 in 280 or the browning Bar in 300 winch.
Of course, I now use the 350, but I've ordered a blaser in 9.3...

Danny, the 6.5 / 06 is the same as the 6.5 Brenneke. It was only introduced a couple of years ago, so I can't imagine it's already obsolete. HTH, Dutch.

Hi Dutch
6,5 brenneke is simmilar to 6,5 06 but not exactly the same ,somewhat more powder capacity due to the shoulder angle and the gun made for this nice rounds have not the fast twist of 6,5 x55(1/8 inch) to stabilise heavy bullets.
Hi Olivier
As far as I know the 6,5x284 is only available in cases from Norma not loaded Ammo .excellent round for a mountain rifle.

I have both and see both as at their best for different functions. The 25-06 is wonderful dual purpose round (varmint/light big game). It is flat shooting and can perform well in both spheres with a good 100 grain bullet.
The 6.5x55 is designed more as a big game rifle for use at moderate ranges. The tight twist that is often used is best suited for the heavy for caliber bullets that give the Swede its legendary penetrating abilities.
My suggestion,
Buy both.

If you want a 24" barrel, greater powder efficiency, less noise, more versatility and something that's as at home killing moose with 140-160gr bullets as it is at killing hares at 200yds with 85-100gr bullets there is only one logical choice.

Contrary to folk lore a fast twist will normaly shoot lighter bullets just as well as heavier bullets. Most sporting 6.5x55 will be most accurate with 100gr ballistic tips. My own has shot a number of hares at 200-225 yards that is as flat and accurate as I need!
