Thought I would share a picture of my first elk with the fellas. Took him with my whelen, one shot @ a little over three hundred yards. He only made it about three yards after the shot. Boy, thats when the work started. We done ok on the field dressing. I seen a much bigger one that was too far away and decided not to wait. Maybe next year on him. I used a 225 gr TSX, in a Rem. 700 CDL @ 2730fps. It broke both front shoulders and came to rest under the skin on the offside. I found the bullet but can't locate right this minute. It petaled out perfectly and looked to be at least 99% weight retention. We had a good hunt, everyone filled their tags, 4 elk and two mulies!

Outside of gardner, colorado. On the border of wolf springs ranch. The first couple of days we didn't see any, then the shooting started on wolf springs ranch and after that they headed our way. We were covered up with em' then.

My brothers elk

All the antlers from the trip. One of the fellas shot a real nice mule deer, second set from the right. I'll try to get some more pics of the mulie, it was a dandy. Thanks for all the help over the past couple of years too fellas. It would have been harder without ya'll.

Looks like a hunt to remember! And yes, that is a really nice mulie there.

I didn't think it was to bad for a diy on public land. It was a backpack in hunt, about 3 miles. I got to see more elk on this trip than I had ever seen, I realize hunts are rare that turn out this good though. I was real happy to finally have blooded that 35 whelen too. I was starting to think all I would ever shoot was paper with it. My brother shot his elk with an 8X57 in a remington 700 classic shooting 180 TSX's @ 2750 fps. His was about 260 yds. Those old catridges will still do the job, they are just a little better with the new bullets and powders.

Sangre Cristo mountains, its close to walsenburg. Yeah I'll be back for sure. Everyone in town was helpful and very nice to deal with. Good people all around.

You're right, you can't expect that on a public land hunt every time. That is a toad of a mulie buck for sure.
