Capstick died during heart surgery to correct previous bypass surgery. My wife was trying to set up a meet with him and his wife when we went over July 99 and had sent a book to him to autograph. Weheard about his death in the papers and recieved a note from Fiona Capstick and the book we had sent. He rekindled my interest in going to hunt in Africa and I'll always be grateful for that. Ralph

I have heard that PHC survived the coronary artery bypass grafting, but then required another procedure on his carotid artery a short time later, or some kind of emergency vascular procedure within a few days of the the CABG, before he had recuperated from the first surgery. Soon after the second surgery, he threw a pulmonary embolus and died suddenly. This was likely a blood clot from a deep vein in the lower extremity that dislodged, must have been pretty massive. Even with proper anticoagulation (heparin, etc.) this can happen. When a patient is so disabled and immobilized by repeated major surgeries and general anesthetics, it is a setup for complications. Also, it sounds like PHC may have had a myocardial infarction prior to his emergency surgery, or during it, or in the immediate post-op period. Never a good setting to do surgery.
