After spending some time in WY mule deer hunting and time in SD pheasant hunting, I've finally got time to scan and post a couple pics. Hopefully this works.

On Friday, 10/10 started hunting in Gen D area of WY just south of Rawlins. By 8:00AM had seen about 25 bucks, with one good 4X4 that I ended up trying to shoot. As we came up out of the bottom of the draw, my buck and 7 others were running just below the ridgeline above, less than 100 yards away. One shot from the .338 dropped the buck.

Good back forks and mass, a bit weak in the front forks but I was really pleased with my first mule deer.

Saturday night at dark, my dad took a buck in the same area, though way up on the side of the cliff. At the shot, it slid 150 feet coming to rest on a few small trees. In the dark, we dressed, propped open and tied it to the tree, then left to return in the morning to recover, when we drag down the mountain. A great old buck, the horns are white from spending so much time in the cliffs and not the sage.

The next morning on the way to get dad's buck, we came across 3 deer in Unit 84 where my brother had a tag. They were standing out in the sage a few hundred yards from the road. After getting out and setting up the shooting sticks, my brother shot twice and dropped the deer. With a few cheater points, it was also a great buck.

Three days of hunting and we had three bucks in the 125-155" range. Tough to top this out west.

These were "semi-guided". My brother lives in Rawlins and knows a lot of the landowners and people who have access. So he and his buddy "guided" us around in the area. There is an outfitter who hunts the same area, but his hunters had all tagged out the first week of the season, so we were the only one's out hunting.

Mark, it was a heck of a hunt. Considering this was the second week of the season, I thought the bucks may be holed up in some nasty spots (like the one my dad shot) and it would be difficultto find good deer. However, there seemed to be deer moving in and out of the area, whether pushed from one section to another or just browsing/drinking at almost all hours of the day.

JL, I couldn't agree more. I think we may try and apply for antelope, deer and elk in that same area in the future. The deer season ends and the elk begins the next day, so we could hunt 3 different animals within a week. We saw three 6x6 elk, along with several rag horns during our deer hunt. The antelope just stood around and looked at you. The biggest obstacle would be the draw, which is 10-15% success on each.
