Hey Fred, Not "bashing" you at all. Simply offering my experience to the thread. Certainly did not mean to attack you in any way. If it came across that way to you, that was not my intention.

Yes I can make a 75yd shot, but wouldn't want to do it w/ a NBT under .375. Read the whole post, the copmment on guys shooting ability refers to another thread about 1/2moa rifles.
I really do understand your thoughts on the B-Tips for the Elk in that situation and would not use them myself even in the 375H&H. Just "my choice" to use a different bullet.

You mentioned "refering to the other thread" and that is really what I'm doing to.

The 6-7 days & vert. mile comment has to do w/ the effort made in pursing game & you really don't want to pass a shot that isn't "perfect". I've been w/ guys who have actually done this, I've actually done it my earlier hunting years.
Me too, because I had the "WRONG" cartridge/bullet combination in my hands at the time. I was just funnin with you, because I seriously believe if "you" went the entire Season without a shot and saw the Trophy of a Lifetime where the chances of not getting a clean kill were evident that "you" would still pass on the shot. Or at least that is my impression.

It is quite obvious there are other posters in the thread that just don't give that a concern at all. The difficult part for me is I disagree with taking low percentage kill shots and try to discourage it by mentioning "Gut Shooting and Wrong End".

You guys have taken the "100 deer" comment a bit to literally, maybe I should have said 20-30?
I don't see a thing wrong with the situation the way you initially stated it, well... maybe way too low a number for some of us. Big Grin But we don't want to fall over the edge into bragging, because that billet is filled right now. Wink (Not by you Fred!!!)

quote:
The beer can bullets goes back to the ole SMK threads, for the guys that want 1/2moa rifles but many can't shoot in the field.
Ah-ha. I missed about 98% of those, by skipping over them. When I did try to get info about how they actually performed "inside" the Game, I only had one guy really provide good information. So, now I understand. Just hadn't heard about the Beer Can bullet description.

...I drive a Dodge not a Chevy,
I've "heard" some people like them but thought it was a myth! Big Grin

The whole problem w/ this or that guy "sharing" his opinion about bullets is that there are guys who do not have the xperience & read this stuff.
Agree completely. Hopefully they will learn who might just be providing the best information for their type of Hunting.

Hey Fred, Really not trying to give you a hard time. You are one of the few (very few) people I see post that would be welcome to Hunt with me. That is the highest compliment I EVER give anyone. If that doesn't clarify how I really think about you, I don't know what would.

Good hunting and clean 1-shot kills to you.

Well HC, I take that as a compliment as there are very few people I share my hunting camp with. If I'm ever in Carolina, I may take you up on that. beer I'ld make you the same offer but hunting in Kalif. is let's just say, challenging at best. Maybe when I move to Montana?

good Lord, whitetails just aren't that tough! Any standard cup bullet will work. Pick one, shut up and go hunt!

I couldn't disagree more. If you go light for caliber and push the bullet fast, you are in for big trouble. Especially on a raking shot. I have seen both 180 gr 30 cal and 150 gr .284 bullets not exit on broadside shots with the bullets placed behind the shoulder. Granted both were fired at magnum speeds but come on. Had either of the shots been raking a mess could have quickly ensued.

I have used partitions on whitetails with great success for over twenty years. Never has a bullet failed to open, never has a bullet failed to reach the vitals from any angle. I have yet to hear from one person who has any amount of real world experience with Partitions slam them as deer bullets. I have used them now in six calibers and all do the same boring thing.....work.....every frigg'in time.

If you had qualified your statement by saying heavy for caliber or nonmagnum speeds I could agree.

Good, that is what I intended. I've found it much MUCH more difficult to find good Hunting buddies than even finding a good woman. With a good woman all you really need to know is to "agree" with whatever she mentions and remember the most important words from your lips are always, "Yes Dear".

Finding a Hunting buddy that places the same value on Game as yourself, enjoys Hunting the same ways, shares where the TROPHY Bucks are located, willing to hang a Stand in 114deg weather because a HUGE Deer was spotted near by, enjoys the World's Finest SC BBQ, helps drag out the kill, helps with the skinning and gutting, and where you feel comfortable laughing together AND at each other while knowing no maliciousness is intended, is a difficult combination to locate. Then feeling comfortable with that person being armed and ready to take Game you are pushing ahead of you in their direction takes some time to sort out.

I've done some limited Hunting on El Toro and Camp Pendleton which was a lot of fun. I do see some strange Laws come out of Califoney and understand why you are looking toward Montana. That would be a good time I'm sure.

Again, great hunting and nothing but clean 1-shot kills to you.
