Some of my friends and I are considering going on an elk/mule deer hunt. However, we're only in the fact-gathering stage-- we're all Southerners, and have very limited knowledge of hunting areas, license issues, seasons, etc. in the western U.S. So my question to the assembled experts is: Is there a good resource that will fill us in on the differences we can expect in terrain, game populations, terrain, trophy quality, licensing issues, and so forth between the various states? Book, web site, etc.

We feel that we need to educate ourselves on the basics before we start talking to agents and/or outfitters.

Thanks in advance,

Pertinax

First and foremost, you need to go to each states game and fish website and find out which ones have draw areas. If you want to hunt for elk in Wyoming, for instance, you need to get on the ball. The money is due in by Jan 31.

Ask each state to send you lists of ranchers that allow hunting and also find out which landowners are participating in land management with the states DNR.

If you are already decided on going with an outfitter, then I suggest you find a reliable source from, as an example, The Eastman's (Hunting) Journal.

Many states require money for their draw very soon, yet others want it by April. This also depends on what species you are looking for.

Colorado would be one of the easiest states as you draw for mulie but can buy elk tags OTC in many units.

Montana offers a deer/elk combo license (about $640.00), and if you find that you draw, contact an outfitter and put in for the limited entry elk, about another $6.00. Montana would be a good state. Contact Eric Albus (type his name in google), and see his Milk River Outfitters website. He is very reasonable.

Another thing to consider is that states like Wyoming have a 'full price tag' and a 'special price tag', which is essentially 2 separate draws. The Special tags increase you chances, but cost almost double.

The first step is to go to each states game and fish website, and start asking questions immediately.

Thanks; we'll do as you suggest. This is all new to me-- "draws", "units", etc.-- here for deer it's just pay your money and go hunt!

We're looking at 2006, so the pressure's not on us just yet for the draws, unless one of those points systems are in effect. We have to decide where to go first though.

Thanks.

PM me you email and we can talk that way or even call each other. I can help you since I've been doing this awhile and can really cut your efforts in half.

I'm a 90% do it yourselfer and I'd rather just talk on the phone or email. We can accomplish more that way.

Point systems are part of it and preference points as well, I'd still start putting in soon.

One of the easiest places to access all of the various state's regulations is here:

Good luck
